Although not strictly a Christmas film, Home Alone is strongly associated with the holiday season, much like the house Kevin protects in the movie. Now, that iconic house is being restored to look exactly as it did during filming, bringing a piece of the beloved 90s comedy back to life – and fans helped make it happen!
The Chicago house featured in the movie Home Alone recently underwent a makeover. When it was previously listed for sale, photos of its very modern interior disappointed fans, as it didn’t resemble the film’s cozy look. Now, the owners are restoring it to its former glory, recreating the iconic Home Alone aesthetic. Project manager Scott Price shared details about the restoration.
According to NBC Chicago, the goal is to recreate the cozy and welcoming feeling of the original movie inside the house. The current homeowner is funding the restoration, aiming to recapture the inviting colors and sense of family that made the home so special. They want to bring that same ‘magic’ back to life.
When the first pictures appeared, fans immediately compared the real house to how it looked in the movie, and the contrast was striking. While the renovated house was beautiful by today’s standards, it lacked the cozy and unique character it had on film.
Whether you agree is up to you, but the rugs with patterns, red and white walls, and detailed decorations in the movie really made the house feel vibrant and suggested both luxury and coziness. Although the house itself is still structurally sound, the newer design is very plain with just white and grey, and it lacks a distinctive style or warmth.
Someone named poohbearthemastiff commented that they would have gladly paid ten times the price for the house if it had been preserved in its original condition, comparing it to the value of a classic car. They feel the renovations have made it indistinguishable from other houses, and even expressed interest in buying it to restore it to its former glory, asking if it’s currently available for purchase. They questioned who would appreciate the current state of the house.
Thegiannaschiller commented that it was sad to see the house transformed into a doctor’s office, saying, “A moment of silence for what once was a house, and is now a sterile doctors office.” Traciemorrissey thought the newer photos looked like they were taken in black and white. Many others shared similar feelings. Fortunately, plans are in place to restore the house to resemble how it appeared in the movie.
We don’t have a specific date for when the house will be fully restored, but we’re hoping to finish the work over the holidays and return it to its original beauty.
