A classic game from the original PlayStation, which debuted in 1995, is being re-released on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 later this month. When the PS1 first launched, it didn’t have many games available. While titles like Rayman, Air Combat, Battle Arena Toshinden, and NBA Jam were popular at the time, the selection was limited compared to the game libraries of later consoles like the PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. However, one standout title really shone on the PS1, and that’s the game that’s getting a new life soon.
Okay, so this is awesome news for us old-school racers! PlayStation just announced that the very first Ridge Racer game is coming back on both PS5 and PS4 in less than a week! It originally hit arcades way back in ’93, and then landed on the PS1 in ’95 where it blew up. That version led to a ton of sequels over the years. Honestly, the series has been quiet for about ten years, but now they’re bringing back the original – I can’t wait to relive those classic drifts!
The latest version of Ridge Racer arrives on January 20th with updated graphics, a rewind feature, and quick saves – features now common in classic PS1 games re-released on PlayStation. It will cost $9.99 on the PlayStation Store, but PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can get it for free.
Relive the classic PlayStation racing game, Ridge Racer, now with improved graphics, save features, and visual filters. Feel the excitement of high-speed racing with distinctive cars, powerful engines, and beautiful environments. Experience the game that helped define a generation of racing titles.
PlayStation will likely continue releasing classic PS1 games throughout 2026. While we don’t know which games will be added to the PlayStation Store next, we might find out more at Sony’s next PlayStation State of Play event, expected to happen next month.
