Director Josh Boone says making the Marvel movie The New Mutants was a very difficult, even “traumatic,” experience for him. He was frank about the film’s troubled journey to theaters, noting its famously long and delayed release.
Josh Boone talks The New Mutants experience
While talking about his new movie, Regretting You, Josh Boone looked back on his experience making The New Mutants. That film faced a lot of problems during production – it was delayed multiple times, required extensive reshoots, and the studio changed ownership when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox.
Boone explained to The Direct that the experience was deeply difficult due to the traumatic circumstances surrounding the film’s production. The studio changed ownership mid-shoot, and then the COVID-19 pandemic impacted its release. Despite enjoying working with the cast and crew, the years-long process ultimately felt unsatisfying.
The movie started as an idea for a scary story set within the world of the X-Men. Disney released it in August 2020, right when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its worst. Unfortunately, it didn’t do well with critics or audiences, receiving a 36% rating from critics and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite enjoying working with talented actors like Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton, director Boone felt exhausted by the production process. He explained they only managed to create about half of the movie they originally envisioned. Now that Marvel Studios plans to introduce the Mutant Saga after Avengers: Secret Wars, Boone was asked if he’d consider revisiting the genre, but he firmly stated he would ‘never do it again‘.
Marvel Studios is working on a new X-Men movie, and Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is set to direct it.
