Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk recently chatted with ComicBook about their upcoming horror-comedy titled “Hell of a Summer,” which is a modern take on the 1999 movie “Idle Hands” directed by Jason Reitman, who also helmed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” During their conversation with host Chris Killian, they discussed their approach to remaking this cult classic and whether Devin Sawa might be involved in some capacity. The remake was first announced in November, with Wolfhard and Bryk set to direct while Reitman will take on the producer’s role. In the original film, Sawa played a high school stoner named Anton whose hand becomes possessed by a deadly force, causing him to kill his friends (portrayed by Seth Green and Elden Henson) who turn into stoner zombies, while also threatening his girlfriend played by Jessica Alba.
In April, the film “Hell of a Summer” by Neon is scheduled for a broad release, having premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. Recently, the co-directors and Fred Hechinger engaged in a conversation with Killian, who was curious about the remake and whether the original film’s leading actor would be involved.
Finn Wolfhard expressed that it’s yet to be determined if he will both direct and revive Sawa, as he stated ‘TBD for both aspects.’
Billy Bryk expressed great enthusiasm about the script, storyline, and concept. To put it simply, he’s thrilled, especially considering Sawa is a renowned figure. The performance in the initial movie was remarkable, and it significantly impacted [“Hell of a Summer”] in various aspects. Therefore, working on the reimagining of “Idle Hands” feels like a unique, circular moment for us.
Back in 2020, Devin Sawa expressed enthusiasm about a potential remake when he talked about it with ComicBook, sharing his eagerness for such an update.
He expressed, “Though it’s unlikely, I’d love to revive the movie ‘Idle Hands’ with a new, youthful Anton and explore fresh interpretations of the hand theme. With the abundance of talented young artists today, I am excited about the idea of witnessing a modern take on ‘Idle Hands’. I wholeheartedly support such an endeavor.
I, too, have expressed my enthusiasm for a follow-up to the film “Idle Hands,” reminiscing about the enjoyable atmosphere on set during filming. Should the opportunity arise, I would be more than ready to rejoin the team without hesitation.
Among all films I’d love to see a sequel for, that particular one stands out. The reason being, the set atmosphere with Elden Henson, Seth Green, Vivica Fox, Jessica Alba, Jack Noseworthy, and many others was like a summer camp and it was an absolute blast.
Idle Hands, initially a popular choice on Comedy Central following its release on home video, undoubtedly contributed to its cult following. Its unique blend of horror elements such as decapitated friends, a friend with a bottle stuck in his skull, and a hand miraculously surviving being zapped in the microwave, made it appealing for upcoming filmmakers like Wolfhard and Bryk. If Reitman gives them the green light, audiences can anticipate an entertaining outcome.
