Idris Elba has discussed his experience portraying the President of the United States in the forthcoming film A House of Dynamite. He shared the difficulties he encountered while preparing for and playing the part, especially as a British actor taking on the role.
In an interview, Elba shared how he dealt with his initial hesitation about taking on the role. He explained, “I was really aware of it,” adding, “But you know […] my grandfather is American, and I spent a significant part of my childhood in America, which helped me feel more confident.” The film is a political thriller (Point Break) and was written by Noah Oppenheim. It will be released in US cinemas on October 10th, and will then be available on Netflix worldwide starting October 24th.
A House of Dynamite features a large group of actors, including Idris Elba as the President. The cast also includes Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. The film centers on how the U.S. government reacts when a single nuclear missile is launched by an unknown attacker towards Chicago.
Taking on the role of the president was difficult, but I’m optimistic that… I aimed to show a more relatable, human side to the character, and I hope viewers appreciate that,” Elba explained about his portrayal. He also discussed collaborating with her in her first movie appearance since Detroit in 2017.
“Working with Kathryn was a dream come true,” Elba explained. “I’ve always been a huge fan of her movies. But more importantly, we created a truly meaningful film – one that will really show how delicate our world is and what it means to be human.”
A House of Dynamite premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 2nd, competing for the Golden Lion. Critics have praised the film, giving it a 93% approval rating. According to the site, the general opinion is that Kathryn Bigelow’s skillfully made A House of Dynamite is a compelling and disturbing thriller that feels realistically frightening.
Elba’s Upcoming Roles Include Masters of the Universe & More
A House of Dynamite is just one of several films Idris Elba has appeared in this year. He’s already starred in the action-comedy Heads of State and the animated comedy Fixed. Later in 2025, on November 26th, he’ll be lending his voice to the character of Chief Bogo in , which is when that film is scheduled to come out.
Idris Elba has a busy schedule planned for 2026 and the years following. He’s set to play Man-At-Arms in the upcoming live-action movie starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, which is generating a lot of excitement. Just last month, it was revealed that Elba will also be the lead in a new film version of the West End play, This Is How It Goes. Additionally, he is reportedly working on a new project which will be produced and distributed by Apple Original Films.
A House of Dynamite will be released theatrically on Oct. 10 before heading to Netflix on Oct. 24.
