As a critic, I’ve been following Idris Elba’s career for years, and it’s clear he knows how to pick a winning project. He first really grabbed my attention in The Wire, which many consider to be one of the greatest TV shows ever created. While he’s definitely proven himself as a capable action star on the big screen, he always seems to find his way back to television, and that’s something I really appreciate – he clearly values strong storytelling regardless of the medium.
Idris Elba recently starred in the thriller Hijack, which was well-received by critics. The show premiered in January 2024 and will return for a new season on January 14th. According to FlixPatrol, Hijack has recently regained popularity and is currently trending on Apple TV as the new season approaches.
On January 4th, the show Hijack climbed one spot on the charts, taking eighth place from Severance. While it’s still behind Pluribus, which has been the most popular show since it debuted in November, the growing interest in Hijack suggests a strong reception when it returns.
The thriller series Hijack first aired on June 28, 2023. Created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith, the show centers on Sam Nelson, played by Idris Elba, a skilled negotiator who has to use his expertise to resolve a hijacking during a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London. The cast also includes Ben Miles (known for Andor), Christine Adams (Black Lightning), and Neil Maskell (Kill List).
The new season shifts the action from a flight hijacking to a different kind of emergency. The story centers around a hostage situation on a Berlin subway train, and the authorities racing to rescue the passengers. Once again, Sam Nelson finds himself at the center of the crisis, where a single mistake could have devastating consequences.
I’m really excited for Season 2! The cast is shaping up to be fantastic, with Christian Näthe, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Archie Panjabi, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul all joining the lineup. I can’t wait to see them in action!
Jim Field Smith will direct the upcoming season. Season 2 will have eight episodes, released one each week.
Hijack Had a Divisive Reception
Critics loved the thrilling first season of Hijack, giving it a 90% rating and a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge on Rotten Tomatoes. However, viewers weren’t as impressed, giving it a score of just 51%.
One reviewer found the film deeply flawed, criticizing its implausible plot and numerous inconsistencies. They felt the passengers’ passive acceptance of the terrorists was unrealistic and showed a disturbing lack of self-preservation. The reviewer strongly doubted such a scenario could ever happen in reality.
Hijack returns on Jan. 14 on Apple TV.
