‘If I Don’t Belong in the Games Industry, I’ll Have to Look Elsewhere’: Keita Takashashi Moves Back to Japan After To a T Flopped

Keita Takahashi’s newest casual life simulation game, from the creator of Katamari Damacy, unfortunately didn’t achieve strong sales.

I was really struck by the image on the cover – a kid frozen in a T-pose – and it immediately made me think about what it’s like to live with a physical disability. It’s a story about feeling different and trying to find your place when you don’t quite ‘fit’ the mold.

However, the concept didn’t appeal to gamers, leading its creator to relocate from California back to Japan.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, the experienced professional discussed his current circumstances in more detail.

My games aren’t widely popular, and I recently had to return to Japan because my latest game, ‘To a T,’ didn’t sell very well. That’s the challenge of being an independent developer – it’s a risk I accept. I don’t think the problem is that my games are too unusual or different; it simply comes down to whether people enjoy them. I still believe there’s a place for fresh ideas, but unfortunately, ‘To a T’ didn’t resonate with players. Ultimately, that’s just how things turned out.

Takahashi said his priority right now is to take care of his children and enroll them in a school in Japan.

He also mentioned he’ll evaluate if he feels he fits into the games industry, and if not, he’ll explore other career options.

We really loved To a T! Our review gave it an 8 out of 10, and we called it the most fun game we’ve ever played.

We wrote:

“To a T” effortlessly moves from strange and funny situations to genuinely heartfelt moments. Ultimately, it’s a joyful experience – the perfect choice when you need a little something to brighten your day and bring a smile to your face, no matter what’s going on.

We hope to see more people check out the game, and that Takahashi continues to create wonderfully imaginative games for years to come.
