As a big fan of thrillers, I’ve been thinking about Alice in Borderland – it just celebrated its fifth anniversary! It’s a really different show compared to something like Stranger Things. It’s based on a manga and falls into that exciting survivor genre, like Battle Royale and The Hunger Games. But what really grabbed me about Alice in Borderland is how well the characters are written. You genuinely connect with Ryōhei Arisu, played by Kento Yamazaki, and Yuzuha Usagi, played by Tao Tsuchiya. They’re not just trying to survive the games; you see the real emotional and psychological toll it takes on them, which is fantastic.
The series Alice in Borderland presents a disturbing, nearly empty version of our world. Those who remain must compete in dangerous games, or face immediate death at the hands of automated drones. The games themselves, categorized by playing card suits, vary in difficulty, with the most harrowing – the ‘heart’ games – forcing players to confront their deepest emotions. The show creates a deeply unsettling atmosphere, similar to the alternate dimension in Stranger Things, by taking familiar elements of reality and twisting them into something truly chilling.
Netflix is known for canceling shows after just two seasons, so it’s notable that Alice in Borderland recently finished its third season. The season neatly concludes the main storyline, though it hints at potential future spin-offs that probably won’t happen. Overall, it provides a satisfying ending and feels like a complete story – which is unusual for a Netflix show, as cancellations are common. Viewers can confidently start watching Alice in Borderland knowing they’ll likely see the story through to its conclusion.
Expect Serious Tension & Drama in Alice in Borderland
While it’s not a replacement for Stranger Things – and nothing ever could be – Alice in Borderland is a compelling show in its own right. Directed by Shinsuke Sato, who also directed Kingdom, Bleach, and I Am a Hero, it features terrifying and intense games. These games are intentionally designed to push the characters to their limits, forcing them to betray each other. Very few characters are truly safe, and even important ones can be eliminated at any moment.
As a huge fan of the survival genre, I genuinely think Alice in Borderland is right up there with the best. What really grabbed me was the dark, intriguing mystery at its heart – trying to figure out what was happening to these characters and if they could ever go back to normal life. Honestly, the show’s episodic format is perfect for this kind of story. It’s so much better than a movie would have been, because it gives the writers time to really build the mystery and, more importantly, let us see how the characters grow and change over all three seasons.
If you enjoy shows like Stranger Things, you’ll likely be hooked by Alice in Borderland. Be warned, though: this popular Netflix series doesn’t offer simple answers. It’s a survival story, and it embraces the genre’s complex and challenging nature.
