The final episode of Stranger Things left many storylines open-ended, and even the happy ending for Joyce and Hopper might not be as positive as it seems. With the show now finished, Netflix is actively looking for its next big hit to fill the void left by Stranger Things.
While Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will offer a new animated story bridging seasons 2 and 3, the main show’s story has essentially ended, and the ending proved controversial. Many fans were upset that the finale didn’t clearly show whether Eleven survived, and overall, there was a lot of disappointment with how the series concluded.
Why Montauk Probably Isn’t The Quiet Life Hopper & Joyce Are Hoping For After Stranger Things
Despite the criticism, many viewers actually liked how the show ended, with some feeling certain characters received appropriate conclusions while others deserved more screen time. A particularly well-received moment was the romantic reunion of Joyce and Hopper, who got engaged after a year and a half of peace following their battle with the Upside Down.
While the ending felt happy, fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet. Remembering how intense the first season of the show was, and knowing how dark the creator’s next project will be, suggests things aren’t always what they seem. Hopper mentioning a sheriff’s job in Montauk hints at a possible fresh start in a new location.
The move to Montauk is a clever reference to the show’s early days. Originally, the Duffer Brothers called Stranger Things “Montauk” because they were inspired by conspiracy theories surrounding Camp Hero and the Montauk Air Force Station – real places rumored to have been sites of secret experiments.
Given the history of Hawkins Lab and its connection to secretive, unethical experiments, it’s reasonable to assume Montauk serves a similar purpose within the show’s storyline. This suggests Hopper will likely encounter even more bizarre and unsettling events at his new job, despite his desire for a peaceful life with Joyce.
Could Montauk Be The Setting For A New Stranger Things Spinoff?
So, the happy ending for Joyce and Hopper isn’t quite as satisfying as it appears. It feels more like the show is leaving room for a potential spinoff focusing on them, even though that might seem strange. Considering Joyce and Hopper were key characters from the beginning, a spinoff centered around them is unexpected.
A successful spinoff usually blends familiar aspects of the original show with fresh faces and storylines, so it doesn’t just feel like another chapter. However, the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff, which features the same characters, location, and time period, proves that a continuation isn’t out of the question – a follow-up focusing on Joyce and Hopper set in Montauk could still work.
