The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film featuring the Avengers, titled “Avengers: Doomsday,” is shrouded in much intrigue. Marvel Studios has made it clear that Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who was previously Iron Man, will be the film’s villain, as seen in the post-credits scene of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Furthermore, the post-credits scene from “Thunderbolts” hints at the Fantastic Four’s spaceship entering Earth-616’s dimension. Beyond these points, however, the specific plot details of “Doomsday” remain a mystery. Even the main characters, the Avengers, find themselves in an unusual position due to two teams competing for control over the brand.
To begin with, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s squad, more famously recognized as the New Avengers, is the initial candidate. They successfully protected New York City from the fury of the Void, but their heroic act didn’t completely sway Sam Wilson into believing they are the rightful heirs to the mantle. Instead, he’s assembling his own team, with Joaquin Torres, famously known as Falcon, being the first member enlisted. As of now, the identities of the remaining team members remain a secret, but Marvel Studios may have subtly hinted at who will be joining Team Cap in the upcoming “Doomsday”.
Marvel Studios’ D23 Panel May Have Revealed Plenty About Avengers: Doomsday
Kevin Feige, being passionate about presenting grand spectacles, ensures Marvel Studios participates in significant events to showcase its productions. However, this year, they chose not to appear at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, which has been a venue for significant announcements in the past. Instead, Marvel shifted focus to D23 in Burbank, CA, where the Russo brothers shared updates about the progress of the movie “Doomsday,” referred to as their most ambitious project yet. To keep the audience engaged, they also presented a compilation video featuring key moments from previous Marvel films.
The discussions surrounding the event center around the integration of lines from Fox’s X-Men films in the teaser. It is indeed confirmed that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and others will reappear in Doomsday. However, the problem lies in their dominance, as they might not have much screen time left. The primary objective of Doomsday appears to be building up the two newly formed Avengers teams. Since Thunderbolts played a significant role in establishing the New Avengers, Sam’s team is playing catch-up. Fortunately, the D23 teaser also showcases some characters who currently don’t belong to any team: Thor, Black Panther, and Ant-Man. Interestingly, these three characters share strong ties with the current Captain America, making them ideal candidates for his squad.
Captain America Will Be Calling on Old Friends in Avengers: Doomsday
Throughout the Captain America and Avengers films, Sam Wilson consistently stands by Steve Rogers’ side, simultaneously earning the respect of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Armed with just a few guns and wings, he valiantly battles Thanos’ forces with unyielding determination, an effort that even the mighty Thor cannot overlook. Falcon, moreover, forges connections in Wakanda, relying on Shuri and her team to construct his Captain America suit. Ant-Man shares a long-standing bond with Sam that spans over a decade. Come the anticipated battle of Doomsday, this history of collaboration is bound to prove invaluable, assembling a team capable of challenging not only the New Avengers but also formidable teams like the Fantastic Four and X-Men.
It’s uncertain which team of Sam will endure in the storylines of “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s inclination to showcase various teams such as the Young Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, it seems unlikely that two groups of Avengers would continue simultaneously. Even if Sam’s group disbands following their victory over Doom, they will still demonstrate that Sam possesses the same leadership qualities as Steve Rogers throughout the MCU.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
