James Gunn’s DC Universe isn’t rushing to produce a Justice League movie right away. While it may seem like the plan is to eventually have Superman join forces with characters such as Batman and Wonder Woman, that’s not the case. Instead, Superman will play a significant role in several stories within the “Superman saga.” After these stories are told, another character might take over, and Batman could be a prime contender for this role. The DC Universe has been subtly hinting at Gotham City and its crime problems. However, there are other parts of the DCU world dealing with conflicts as well.
In the second season of Peacemaker, though it doesn’t star a famous DC Universe comic book character, it still has numerous ties to the broader DCU. The initial episode brings Superman and the Justice League into the picture, but despite Peaceman’s aspirations to join them, his application is rejected, leaving him embarrassed and heading back home. However, his pals help him regain his footing, and one of them casually reveals information about a specific member of the Justice League. Note: This discussion includes spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2.
Peacemaker‘s Vigilante Does(n’t) Know a Thing or Two About Aliens
At the close of Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 2, the entire gang from 11th Street reunites for the first time post-Butterfly invasion victory. They celebrate this reunion by drinking beer on Emilia Harcourt’s roof, but Chris isn’t solely there for revelry. He attempts to have a deep conversation with Harcourt, only to be dismissed by her. This dismissal prompts him to leave the party and venture into another dimension. The rest of the group spends the night in Harcourt’s apartment, with Adrian Chase eager to share his intriguing insights in Episode 3. However, Harcourt and Leota Adebayo aren’t interested in his chatter, so they send him to bother John Economos instead.
The A.R.G.U.S. agent initially refuses to participate in Adrian’s holiday-themed antics, but later becomes curious about spiders with Adrian. When Adrian stumbles on a question about the number of eyes a spider has, he diverts attention by bringing up an unrelated fact: that Martians have just one eye. Although this contradicts mainstream DC lore, the key point is not debatable facts about Martians. Instead, Adrian’s statement implies that Martians are real and well-known on Earth. Only one character could possess such knowledge.
The DCU Is Pushing the Martian Manhunter Agenda
The most well-known Martian character in DC Comics is J’onn J’onzz, better known as the Martian Manhunter. After his brother creates a virus that destroys their entire species on Mars, he leaves his home planet and adapts to living among humans using his shape-shifting powers. Initially working in law enforcement on Earth because of his former role as a police officer on Mars, he finds this line of work doesn’t fit him well. Eventually, he becomes a member of the Justice League of America, where he works alongside Superman and others to protect the world. However, before joining the Justice League, there’s no mention of him being part of any team, and it appears that he may have initially embarked on a solo career. Given his immense strength as a character in DC Comics, this solo approach could be a wise choice for Martian Manhunter.
The essence of J’onn’s character will not only revolve around strength when he transitiones to live-action. It was confirmed in Superman that Chocos cookies, a favorite snack of the hero, are still in production, and Gunn hinted further on social media by stating, “A particular Martian will be pleased to know Chocos Inc is thriving with #Superman.” Although it may take time for Martian Manhunter to enjoy cookies and combat crime in cinemas, it’s clear that the DC Universe has significant plans for him. If Vigilante persists in spreading false information about his kind, he might find himself confronted by the Martian.
