In the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” there’s a risk that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could blunder by reintroducing Chris Evans’ Captain America. It has been six years since Steve Rogers stepped away to return the Infinity Stones and opted to remain in the past. Over this time, the MCU has undergone significant changes – both within its fictional universe with the arrival of the multiverse, and in reality, as opinions towards the franchise have become increasingly critical. The multiversal event in “Doomsday” will see the return of several characters and actors from Marvel’s previous stories.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, but Chris Evans’ Captain America hasn’t been confirmed yet, though he has reappeared in the MCU as Johnny Storm in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. However, I personally believe it’s not a question of if, but when and how we’ll see Steve Rogers again. Even before Downey Jr. was cast as Doom, it seemed plausible that Marvel would want both actors for “Avengers 5” or “6”, given the multiversal aspects, the grand scope of these events, and the growing emphasis on nostalgia.
Over the last year and change, that sense of anticipation has heightened significantly. The Iron Man actor’s return, following his Oscar triumph, adds fuel to the fire, creating a strong impression that Chris Evans might reappear in some form. Given their pivotal roles, they are undeniably the faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it comes to box office buzz, there’s no trump card left to play other than reuniting them on screen once more.
Speculation and gossip run rampant about Steve’s potential role in Doomsday, with ideas spanning from him and Peggy becoming Doom’s targets, to a turn as an antagonist alongside RDJ, mirroring the Hydra Captain America from the comics. However, these details are yet to be confirmed. As things stand, it appears he may return – but it might not be advisable.
Chris Evans’ Captain America Shouldn’t Return In Avengers: Doomsday
It’s hardly necessary to point out, yet here it goes: Evans delivers an outstanding performance as Captain America. He masterfully portrays the character, and his transformation from idealistic American hero to a man who questioned institutions, but remained steadfast in upholding what was right, is nothing short of amazing. It’s not that we don’t want him back; quite the contrary, it’s because his performance was so exceptional that it leaves us reluctant to see him go. The character’s journey culminated in an arc that ranks among the MCU’s finest, even earning him the satisfying conclusion he deserved.
Is it truly beneficial to undo all of that? Considering the financial aspect, it might be. However, in terms of narrative, character development, and legacy, I struggle to see how it would be. The movie Avengers: Endgame was rich with character payoffs for Captain America, such as wielding Mjolnir, saying “Avengers assemble,” and even dancing with the girl. These were not merely fan services but well-deserved rewards for his journey. If this endpoint has already been reached, why reverse it just to introduce a new villain and rekindle nostalgic excitement at the expense of an emotional, satisfying conclusion?
Absolutely, it might take a different turn, introducing a Steve Rogers variant, maybe even a Hydra Captain. However, this could lead to diminishing returns. Casting Downey Jr. as Doom is essentially stunt casting, but there’s potential. Yet, if the team is filled with evil Avenger variants, played by well-known MCU actors, it might appear more like a cheap trick instead of exploring something powerful and unique for Doom.
The MCU Needs To Move On From Its Original Heroes
Another way of expressing that could be: “There’s also a challenge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) regarding their new heroes and how they can progress given their tendency to resurrect characters. The case of Sam Wilson as Captain America illustrates this dilemma, with Kevin Feige himself admitting that the low box office of ‘Brave New World’ was partly due to it being the first film without Chris Evans in the role [according to Deadline]. So, making a new Captain America is particularly tricky when the original one continues to appear, even if Evans were to rejoin only for his character’s demise.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to break free from the grip of nostalgia and stop relying on past successes. If stories like ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ are going to help achieve this by resetting everything and starting fresh, it will require a significant amount of work. However, with more familiar faces returning, that task becomes even more daunting. It seems likely that we’ll see Chris Evans back in the future, but I can only hope that if he is asked to return, he will decline. For now, I hold onto the hope that when offered a chance, his answer might just be: “I don’t believe I will.
Here are the release dates for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies:

2. Following that, Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18th, 2026.
