The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t afraid to take risks. If a unique approach to a character or storyline feels right, they’ll go for it – a prime example is Wanda Maximoff, who quickly joined the Avengers instead of being portrayed as a feared mutant. But this willingness to be different doesn’t mean they ignore the source material. The people behind the MCU are clearly passionate fans themselves, and they love including nods to older Marvel stories that have shaped the franchise.
I’m so excited to see the X-Men finally getting some big-screen time, especially with some of our favorite actors from the Fox movies returning for Avengers: Doomsday! While I’m sure Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, and others won’t be the only surprises Marvel has up its sleeve, I really hope they don’t overdo it with cameos. Honestly, I’m starting to worry that a truly amazing Spider-Man moment might get lost in the shuffle if they try to pack in too much. I’m hoping for quality over quantity, you know?
Marvel Studios Is Playing Coy About Spider-Man’s Role in the Next Two Avengers Movies

Man, the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home really left Peter in a tough spot. Losing Aunt May and everyone forgetting who he is meant he had to start completely over – a small apartment, a homemade suit, the whole deal. It’s been quiet on the Peter Parker front since then, but I’m really excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming in July 2026! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to focus on Peter and his friends, but they’re even bringing in Hulk and Punisher! That tells me Spider-Man is still a major player in the MCU. Though, apparently, Doomsday is going to show a different side of things, so who knows what’s next!
Okay, so here’s the deal with Doomsday: Spider-Man isn’t currently slated to appear, and honestly, it feels like a huge loss. After everything that happened with Tony Stark, Peter Parker seemed to step back, and it doesn’t look like the new Avengers – Sam Wilson’s Captain America or Yelena Belova – are going to ask for his help. That leaves a pretty significant hole, because let’s face it, Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s biggest star. Now, I’m hearing rumors that instead of utilizing current MCU heroes or even bringing in someone like Wolverine to fill that space, they’re considering bringing Tobey Maguire back as Spider-Man. And that, in my opinion, would be a massive misstep. It risks completely undermining a really iconic moment, and frankly, it just doesn’t feel right for the story they’re trying to tell.
The Other Live-Action Spider-Men Have Had Their Time in the Sun

What truly sets No Way Home apart is its incredible combination of everything fans love about Spider-Man. The film brings back iconic villains from previous Spider-Man movies, challenging Peter like never before and forcing him to seek help. The appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their versions of Spider-Man are spectacular, culminating in an unforgettable battle filled with amazing scenes. However, the most impactful part of their visit is the guidance they offer to young Peter, particularly in dealing with loss. The film is emotionally powerful, and that impact is unique to this specific story.
Bringing back Maguire in another film just feels like a way to boost ticket sales, and Garfield is in the same situation. Continuing his story properly would require a separate movie, which isn’t likely to happen. The smartest move is to treat No Way Home as the last time we see Maguire and Garfield as Spider-Man, allowing Tom Holland to continue as the main Spider-Man. Down the line, maybe we can explore a live-action version of one of Spider-Man’s students, but that should be the extent of it.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
