‘I’m So Happy’: Japanese Players Rejoice Over Finally Buying Cut-Price PS5

Sony launched a more affordable version of the PlayStation 5 in Japan this week, and many excited customers have already shared photos of their new consoles online.

The system initially performed well in Japan, but its success has faded due to the declining value of the yen and increasing costs of the hardware. It appears previous leadership allowed the hardware to become outdated in the Japanese market.

The new CEO, Hideaki Nishino, reportedly wasn’t happy with how the console was performing in Japan. He’s now developing a plan to revitalize it, focusing on a model specifically tailored for the Japanese market, similar to the approach taken with the Switch 2.

The new version significantly lowers the device’s price, from around $473 to $350. While Sony might lose money on each unit sold, the company believes it’s crucial to compete with Nintendo’s popular hybrid consoles.

Social media is currently flooded with Japanese gamers who purchased the more budget-friendly console when it became available yesterday.

“Finally, the PS5 has arrived at our home,” one person wrote on X (or Twitter). “I’m so happy.”

The PlayStation 5 hasn’t been selling well in Japan recently, only moving a little over 5,000 units last week. While it probably won’t outsell the upcoming Switch 2, Sony hopes to see sales improve enough to keep the PS5 a noticeable presence in the Japanese market.

We should get early indications of the impact from Famitsu in its sales data report next week.
