I’m Sorry, But My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Is a Letdown

The second season of “My Dress-Up Darling” was highly anticipated not only for the summer of 2025 but for the entire year. Following the release of Season 1 in 2022, fans of CloverWorks’ excellent adaptation of Shinichi Fukuda’s manga quickly grew fond of characters like Kitagawa Marin and Wakana Gojo, including me. Ever since the announcement of Season 2, it had been eagerly awaited by me. Upon its release this summer, I must admit that I was initially impressed. However, as the second season progresses, the show that once held a special place among fans seems to have lost some of its luster.

In simple terms, Season 2 maintains the same storyline and character development as Season 1. Marin Kitagawa remains smitten with cosplay, while Wakana Gojo continues to delight in designing costumes, both concealing their burgeoning affection for each other. The new season offers enhancements over its predecessor, such as introducing fresh characters like Marin’s friends, her hairdresser, and other cosplay enthusiasts. However, there seems to be a certain element lacking in Season 2 that has dampened the show’s pace and enjoyment for me.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Has Been a Slog

frankly speaking, it’s unfortunate to confess, but watching most of My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 has felt more like a tedious task than an enjoyable pastime. Granted, my profession requires me to watch the show, yet I was a passionate admirer of Season 1 and eagerly anticipated the second season. Regrettably, it seems as though the series has strayed from the elements that initially captivated its audience.

In our series, cosplay was always a significant element, yet never the central focus. The first season gave us a foundation in cosplay and its culture, all while progressing the main storyline and character development. However, the pace of Season 2 seems to have slowed down compared to the first season’s momentum. While it appears that more emphasis is placed on cosplay this time around, it doesn’t manage the spotlight in the same balanced manner as before.

In Season 2 of “My Dress-Up Darling”, the episodes can be simply categorized into two distinct parts: those centered around character development and those emphasizing cosplay. Unlike Season 1, where both elements were intertwined, this season has established a noticeable separation. This separation is such that when a character-focused episode airs, the show essentially overlooks cosplay entirely. Conversely, during cosplay-centric episodes, the show’s narrative and pace seem to slow significantly, making it challenging to progress through Season 2.

From my perspective as a viewer, it seems the tone and pace of the cosplay and character-centric episodes in this season feel more like they belong to distinct shows rather than harmoniously integrated parts of one. Unlike last season, where the blend between these subjects was effortless, this season has struggled to achieve that same seamless fusion.

My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 Has One Redeeming Factor

While my previous statement might give the impression that I dislike the second season of “My Dress-Up Darling,” it’s important to clarify that this is not entirely accurate. Instead, I feel that Season 2 has struggled somewhat in comparison to its first season when it comes to storytelling effectiveness. However, there have been two standout episodes in Season 2 that offer a refreshing change of pace and inject some excitement into an otherwise lackluster season. These episodes introduce Chitose Amano, a crossplayer who crosses paths with Gojo and Marin at a convention in Episode 2 and Episode 3 of the second season.

In these two episodes, Chitose, known as Amane in crossplay, is the central figure. The episodes skillfully combined Chitose’s enthusiasm for crossplay with the series’ main storyline and character development. These episodes, reminiscent of the emotional narrative from Season 1, were exceptionally well-crafted. Although they didn’t significantly advance Marin and Gojo’s romantic relationship, they did delve deeper into their individual character journeys. Additionally, they introduced a new character that left fans with plenty to feel emotional about.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly watching the second season of “My Dress-Up Darling.” So far, we’ve seen ten episodes unfold, and while I’m optimistic, I hope the final two can find their stride and bring back the magic of the earlier episodes. It’s a bit disappointing to say this, but unless something unexpectedly amazing happens, Season 2, unfortunately, hasn’t met my high expectations…yet!
