I’m Starting To Worry We’re Never Getting Elder Scrolls 6

The amount of time I’ve invested in “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” is almost hard to believe. Many of my cherished gaming moments revolve around this game, having initially played it on an Xbox 360 and then repurchased it for the Nintendo Switch. Just like “Stardew Valley”, it’s a title that I find myself unable to limit to a single copy. Given that “Skyrim” is among my top favorite games of all time, I’ve eagerly anticipated “The Elder Scrolls VI” for quite some time now. However, with each passing day, I can’t help but grow concerned that we might be waiting in vain.

The anticipation for The Elder Scrolls 6, much like other highly anticipated sequels, might have been stirred up prematurely when the first teaser trailer was unveiled in 2018. At that time, it seemed as though the game wasn’t very far along in its development. However, years later, we still find ourselves with minimal information about The Elder Scrolls 6. This could be a testament to Bethesda’s skill at keeping their projects under wraps. Yet, considering that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was leaked well before its release, there’s some doubt about this secrecy. Despite various rumors and whispers regarding the game, our actual knowledge boils down to the fact that The Elder Scrolls 6 is supposedly in development. Whether this vague confirmation will lead to my immersion back into a new main series Elder Scrolls game remains uncertain.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Teaser Trailer Is Older Than Skyrim Was When It Launched

At the E3 conference in June 2018, when The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was already over 7 years old, a teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls 6 was unveiled. As of this June, that trailer is 7 years old as well, making it older than Skyrim was when it first debuted. Since then, we’ve mostly been left with rumors and speculations about The Elder Scrolls 6, but no new facts or gameplay footage have been revealed.

Over the course of its history, beginning with The Elder Scrolls: Arena, the series has exhibited varying tempo in terms of release schedules. For instance, there was a 4-year gap between Morrowind and Oblivion, during which expansions were also introduced to keep fans engaged until the next major installment. However, the longest break between consecutive main series titles occurred over a span of 6 years, as witnessed in the interval between Daggerfell and Morrowind.

The trailer for “The Elder Scrolls 6” has finally appeared, but it’s been an astonishingly lengthy wait since the release of “Skyrim”, with a full 14 years now passed without a new main series installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise. Even the latest expansion for Skyrim, “Dragonborn”, is over a decade old at this point. Granted, we’ve experienced other Elder Scrolls games like The Elder Scrolls Online and mobile games such as Blades since then. However, the absence of The Elder Scrolls 6 is a striking departure from the usual pattern, causing me to ponder the reasons behind this significant delay in development.

Is Bethesda Afraid of Skyrim’s Shadow?

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but ponder about the happenings behind the veil at Bethesda. It’s plausible they’ve been meticulously crafting the ultimate Elder Scrolls adventure that fans will cherish forever, and the reason it’s taking so long is because of its intricate depth. However, a part of me fears we could be experiencing something akin to the George R.R. Martin “Game of Thrones” predicament. I can’t help but suspect they might be grappling with creative complexities, potentially finding themselves in a creative rut.

Previously, Bethesda managed to continue developing the Elder Scrolls games due to their notable success. However, none have gained the level of popularity and enduring appeal as Skyrim. To this day, players are still engrossed in it and discussing it. Creating a sequel to such an iconic game must certainly be quite a challenge.

How would one surpass the appeal of “Skyrim” and create an even more captivating experience with “The Elder Scrolls 6”? That’s a challenging question indeed, as it requires crafting an experience that could surpass a game that continues to be cherished by many. Developing “The Elder Scrolls 6” is no small feat, given the high expectations and the lengthy development process. Many players are eager for a worthwhile payoff after such a long wait.

How might such a game appear, given the significant evolution in gaming and development since the release of Skyrim? The open world should be expansive, engaging, diverse, and brimming with the whimsy and charm reminiscent of Skyrim. However, it must also surpass it. It requires being even larger, superior, and graphically more advanced. The narrative should captivate us, surpassing that of the Dragonborn character. This is a substantial undertaking, one that might realistically take considerable time to accomplish. Yet, it’s also an endeavor that could potentially be overpowering.

With Game Cancellations Getting More Common, ES6 Isn’t Guaranteed

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been nervously anticipating the release of “The Elder Scrolls 6.” It’s no secret that the AAA gaming industry has faced some rocky terrain recently. Big-name projects have been canceled, studios have closed, and layoffs have swept through the sector like a storm. Highly anticipated sequels in beloved series, such as “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” haven’t had the smoothest of debuts. And let’s not forget about the escalating costs – it’s becoming increasingly pricey to develop and acquire these games.

As a dedicated fan, it’s important to acknowledge the context that Bethesda, a studio now under Microsoft’s wing, could potentially bring changes. The past years at Microsoft have seen shifts and uncertainties, including layoffs and restructures. Bethesda, being one of the major players, has recently released the remastered version of Oblivion which boosted its standing in the gaming industry. However, I can’t help but feel a sense of apprehension given the current climate, especially since we’ve been eagerly awaiting updates for such a long time on this highly anticipated game.

I am deeply hoping that my doubts about the upcoming sequel of Skyrim are misplaced. This game holds a special place in my heart, and I eagerly look forward to playing its successor. However, as time passes without any new developments, I grow anxious that the speculation we’ve nurtured for so long might just be wishful thinking.
