Since his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011, Thor has become one of the Avengers’ most prominent members. He was one of the original team members and has grown into a fan favorite, especially thanks to his appearances in some of the MCU’s most humorous films. With four solo movies under his belt, Thor is currently the only character to have starred in so many individual films within the MCU. Despite his significant screen time, there are still aspects of his story that could have been improved.
Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Thor’s story has developed and changed as the character himself has grown. The movies have explored many different Thor storylines, some taken almost directly from the comics and others inspired by them. However, the MCU has sometimes shortened or skipped over certain storylines, which has led to a few disappointing moments despite Thor’s overall strong presence in the franchise.
3) Thor’s Role in Asgardian Politics

Throughout every Thor movie, one thing remains constant: Thor is clearly Asgardian royalty. Right from the start, when he confidently walked through Asgard’s grand throne room greeted by cheering crowds, his story has always been about his position in Asgard’s royal family. It was obvious that his father, Odin, favored him as the next king, and that he was expected to one day rule Asgard.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t really followed up on the idea of Thor becoming king. While films like *Thor: The Dark World* and *Thor: Ragnarok* hinted at his royal status as a prince, they never revisited the possibility of him taking the throne. His later appearances in *Avengers: Infinity War*, *Avengers: Endgame*, and *Thor: Love and Thunder* strongly suggest he doesn’t want to be king, which unfortunately means some great storylines from the comics can’t be used in the MCU.
2) Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor

Only a few characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been powerful enough to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and one of the most anticipated was Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. Natalie Portman first appeared as Jane in the Thor movies from 2011 and 2013, but was missing from later stories. She returned in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, transformed into the heroic Mighty Thor as she’s known in the comics, fulfilling a long-awaited moment for fans.
Natalie Portman proved herself a talented actor long before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but her introduction as the Mighty Thor felt delayed and ultimately unsatisfying. While it was great to see her powerful and heroic portrayal of Jane Foster, and to give Thor a truly equal partner, the MCU unfortunately ended her story far too quickly. After just one film, the Mighty Thor was killed off, potentially losing a character with a lot of narrative potential.
1) Gorr the God Butcher’s Arc

After the Infinity Saga concluded, several compelling villains from Thor’s comic books hadn’t yet appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gorr the God Butcher was at the top of many fans’ wish lists. When Christian Bale was cast to play him in *Thor: Love and Thunder*, it seemed like the film would deliver a truly great version of the character. Sadly, that wasn’t what happened.
Gorr’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt rushed and didn’t fully explore the depth of his character from the comics. His complex conflict with Thor was condensed into just one film. Despite having the potential to be a truly impactful villain who challenged the gods, Gorr ultimately felt underdeveloped and his story ended too soon. Although the Multiverse could theoretically bring him back for future Thor movies, it seems unlikely, as *Love and Thunder* provided a fairly conclusive ending to his arc, even if it was abrupt.
