Epcot, undeniably, is my preferred park at Disney World. What captivates me is its origin, stemming from Walt Disney’s vision to create a city of tomorrow. The charm of the World Showcase lies in its ability to transport you to various international destinations, each with a unique Disney touch. Lastly, it’s the culinary offerings that make Epcot stand out as the best when it comes to food within Walt Disney World.
Although some might not share my enthusiasm for the latest changes in Epcot, and I too find certain aspects underwhelming, it remains my preferred destination whenever I step into the enchanted world on earth. However, recent developments at Disneyland Paris have sparked a hint of apprehension regarding the fate of one of Epcot’s newer attractions.
The Ratatouille Ride At Disneyland Paris Is Losing Its 3D
This morning, it was revealed that Remy’s Totally Zany Adventure, a dark ride inspired by the Pixar film Ratatouille located at Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland Paris, will shut down in October for an extensive multi-month refurbishment. During this time, both the waiting line and the ride experience are planned to receive upgrades. A fresh scene featuring a French artist is expected to be incorporated into the queue, while the ride’s props will be updated and the projections will be enhanced.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the reopening of my favorite ride! But, there’s a slight catch: the 3D video sequences will now be presented in standard 2D format. After extensive testing and surveys, this change seems to be what guests prefer. Personally, I, as one of those guests, hope this transformation continues in France, as I can’t help but cherish the immersive experience that 3D provides.
Could Epcot Be Next?
The Ratatouille-themed ride at Epcot (located within the France pavilion) in Disneyland Paris, which opened in 2021, shares the same functionality as its counterpart in Paris. This means it’s plausible, if not probable, that any future updates planned for one attraction may be implemented on the other at some point.
It’s surprising to think that a theme park would abandon a significant element such as 3D technology, but history shows us it can happen. For instance, Universal Orlando switched the Skull Island: Reign of Kong attraction from 3D to 2D in 2024, and it remains in its 2D format to this day. There’s also ongoing speculation that Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts roller coaster may follow suit by transitioning from 3D to 2D, although no such change has occurred as of yet.
It seems that having multiple projection systems for 3D displays makes their maintenance more challenging compared to simpler 2D systems, which are generally easier to maintain and repair. As a result, issues with 2D systems are less likely to lead to attractions being shut down.
Due to numerous new additions planned for Disney World over the next few years causing construction at all parks except Epcot, and with Spaceship Earth currently closed for its own renovation, it seems unlikely that Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure will need refurbishment anytime soon. However, when the time comes for its maintenance, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
