Image Comics is a leading independent comic book publisher, known for its diverse range of titles. A key reason for its success is that creators retain ownership of their work, leading to a variety of popular series like Spawn, Saga, Invincible, and Feral. The 2010s were a particularly strong period for Image, as they attracted major creators from Marvel and DC and gave them creative freedom, bringing talents like Rick Remender, Grant Morrison, and Jonathan Hickman to the publisher.
Around the same time, Image Comics released a truly original title: Sex Criminals, created by writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky. Despite the potentially misleading title (which might remind some of Law & Order), the comic is a funny and imaginative crime story. It centers on Suzie and Jon, who discover they can both pause time during sexual activity. They decide to use this unusual ability to rob banks, and that’s the premise of Sex Criminals. Now, Prime Video is adapting the series for television.
Prime Video Orders Series Adaptation of Sex Criminals Comic

Prime Video has officially greenlit a TV series based on the comic Sex Criminals, over three years after initial reports. The show will consist of eight episodes. The writers of the acclaimed film The Big Sick, Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani, are writing and producing the series, with Nanjiani also starring. They’re collaborating with Tze Chun, a frequent partner, on the adaptation. The series will be produced by LuckyChap, a production company co-founded by Margot Robbie, and Gordon and Nanjiani’s Winter Coat Films.
I’m really excited about the upcoming Sex Criminals project! As fans of Winter Coat, it feels like exactly the kind of unique and heartfelt story they’re known for – a love story set in a really unexpected place. When LuckyChap introduced us to Matt and Chip’s comic, we immediately knew we wanted to adapt it for the screen, and we’re thrilled to be doing that with Tze Chun and Prime Video.
Fraction and Zdarsky said they were thrilled to see such skilled people working on their comic, even jokingly calling it ‘dumb’.
When Sex Criminals came out in 2013, it quickly gained a dedicated following. Time magazine named it the best comic of that year, praising its blend of humor and thoughtful exploration of sexuality. The series was recognized with two Eisner Award nominations, including one for Best Continuing Series, and it ultimately won the award for Best New Series.
The story behind the series is actually quite complex and deals with mature themes. It features a diverse cast of characters, each with unique abilities, and secret organizations that keep them in check. It’s a daring and explicit series, so much so that it was one of the most frequently challenged books in the US, ranking seventh on the American Library Association’s list in 2016.
