Wow, things have really taken a turn. Some people who dislike video games have created a website dedicated to monitoring Steam player counts, essentially to highlight which games aren’t doing well.
The website is called Flopathon, which makes its purpose very clear, so we won’t be providing a link to it.
This website shows the same game data as SteamDB, but it presents it with unnecessary negativity, almost as if it’s hoping games will fail.
This website aims to provide honest, real-time player numbers without any advertising or sponsorships. It also lets the community decide whether games are successful or not, and strongly opposes any attempts by companies to manipulate information through advertising or biased reviews.
According to the website, they refuse to be silenced or misrepresented, letting the facts speak for themselves.
While presenting unbiased information is valuable – and resources like SteamDB already do that – what’s happening here isn’t neutral at all.
The website uses unusual and somewhat harsh language – it refers to games as “targets” and asks you to “enlist” instead of sign up. This gives the whole site a mean and unfriendly feel.
Importantly, the number of players currently on Steam doesn’t tell the whole story. Even if the data is correct, it usually represents only a part of the total player base for most games.
Reliable data about how well games are doing is hard to find. As a result, Steam’s charts – which often get their information from the independent website SteamDB – have become the primary way people track a game’s performance, whether it’s thriving or struggling.
This information is helpful when you consider where it comes from, but we’re lacking similar data for consoles and other important measurements besides occasional sales numbers. This incomplete picture can be very misleading.
Flopathon highlights how much attention is paid to Steam player counts, and unfortunately, it also shows people trying to sabotage games they don’t like.
The website’s ‘Testimonials’ page does at least provide some hope among the despair:
Anyway, probably best to steer clear of this, yeah?
