I never expected to be writing about the band Imagine Dragons and video games! I enjoyed their song in the opening of Arcane and definitely heard Warriors a lot during the first season of Sweet Home. Beyond that, I wasn’t very familiar with their music. I knew they were popular with League of Legends fans, and I thought that was where their involvement with gaming ended. But I was surprised to learn that Dan Reynolds, the lead singer, has started a game studio and just released the first beta version of their game.
Dan and Mac Reynolds have started a new game studio called Night Street Games, and they’re developing a really promising game. While it still needs some polish and faces tough competition, I think Last Flag has something truly unique and deserves a closer look. I suspect it could become incredibly popular – and I’m personally very excited about it.
Last Flag Looks Like A Very Interesting Hero Shooter

Okay, I’ll be honest, I think a lot of people are getting tired of hero shooters, and I totally see why. It was really disappointing when Highguard shut down, and it makes sense so many games in this style are struggling. Even Overwatch, which used to be the biggest name in the genre, had a rough launch with its sequel and hasn’t really recovered. But even though I get why people are burnt out on them, I genuinely think Night Street Games’ Last Flag could be something special. I really believe it has what it takes to stand out.
Last Flag is a hero shooter built around the classic Capture the Flag game mode (CTF). As someone who loved Team Fortress 2’s version of CTF, I see a lot of similarities in Last Flag. It clearly takes inspiration from TF2’s unique style – the cool 70s-inspired character designs, vibrant world, cartoonish graphics, and over-the-top powers all feel familiar. However, Last Flag still manages to create its own distinct identity.
Last Flag stands out because it’s completely focused on Capture the Flag competitions. It’s not just a typical take on the idea—it takes the concept to a new level, essentially turning it into a high-stakes game of hide and seek. Instead of a flag being stationary, each team spends the first minute hiding their flag somewhere on the map, then fights for control of radio towers to locate the enemy flag. It’s a unique blend of Battleship, Fortnite, and Team Fortress 2, creating a chaotic and incredibly fun experience. The game ends with the team that finds the flag racing to defend it at their base.
While Highguard didn’t have a public test phase, Last Flag launched a Beta during Steam Next Fest to see how players would react and gather feedback. This was a good idea, but it quickly revealed a major problem: not many people are interested. Steam Charts show the game’s Beta peaked at only 334 players at the same time. That’s a surprisingly low number, even for a game that isn’t trying to be as popular as Overwatch. This is disappointing because Last Flag actually has the potential to be a top-tier hero shooter.
We Need More Games Like Last Flag

Unlike many hero shooters that simply copy successful formulas, Last Flag is doing something truly different. It’s laser-focused on Capture the Flag and offers a fresh take on the classic mode. This approach allows the game to evolve and expand with new content and ideas, instead of trying to do everything at once. Last Flag isn’t repeating past mistakes; it’s building something new from the ground up.
Similar attempts have been made before, like with Highguard, which combined raid-style shooting with hero shooter elements, but it launched too early and wasn’t successful. Last Flag isn’t simply copying popular games, and it’s avoiding the mistakes of Highguard because it’s being developed with ongoing testing and feedback. Night Street Games likely doesn’t need Last Flag to be a massive hit to be profitable, but it probably needs more than 300 active players to continue supporting the game after release.
Since Last Flag is a game you buy once rather than a free-to-play title, I really hope the developers add an offline mode. The game already has bots that can join your team, which suggests it’s possible. This would make sure the game remains enjoyable even if the online servers eventually shut down. However, based on my experience in the playtest and the many great reviews, it’s clear Last Flag is something special. I didn’t expect this hero shooter, created by the lead singer of Imagine Dragons, to be as good as it is, but it’s exactly what gamers need right now.
As a longtime multiplayer fan, I have to say, Last Flag Flying is a really welcome surprise. It’s not overly complicated, it’s bright and colorful, and I don’t feel like they’re constantly trying to squeeze more money out of me, which is amazing. The game feels super polished, there’s enough depth to keep things interesting with friends, and it’s clear the developers have built something they can really expand on with future updates. Honestly, I see so much potential here, and I really hope it gets the recognition it deserves. It’s not often a multiplayer game gets me genuinely excited, and maybe I’m looking at it through rose-tinted glasses because it reminds me of Team Fortress 2, but in a sea of greedy, boring AAA shooters, Last Flag Flying is a breath of fresh air. It’s a fantastic first game from a studio I’m really hoping sticks around for a long time.
