Independence Day director creating TV series based on Web3 game

As a seasoned analyst with a penchant for both gaming and film industries, I find this Space Nation project to be an intriguing blend of two worlds that I hold dear. With Roland Emmerich at the helm, I’d expect nothing less than grandeur and spectacle, given his impressive track record of blockbuster films like Independence Day and 2012.

A television show inspired by the “Space Nation” online game, set in reality and directed by Roland Emmerich, is currently being developed for broadcast. The production of this series is being overseen by producer Marco Weber.

Based on a special report from Variety, the pair are planning to delve into the game’s historical background, mythos, and environment using a live-action series. However, they’re not creating it for broadcast television or any streaming platform.

Instead, the report shows that Emmerich and Weber are considering unconventional distribution strategies, specifically licensing series content for “second window streaming.” This is a format where gamers could simultaneously stream the TV show along with their live gameplay and comments.

In an interview with Variety, Weber expressed that our strategy aligns with the broader concept behind the game. Our aim is to self-fund a substantial part of the budget by leveraging our own economic system and our own digital currency.

Space Nation

Space Nation is an extensive multiplayer online game where participants assume the role of space captains aboard their own ships. This game is designed with Web3 capabilities and is built utilizing blockchain technology. Consequently, players have the potential to engage in a digital economy based on tokens, which includes non-interchangeable tokens (NFTs). These NFTs can be purchased, sold, or traded within the game itself.

Space Nation Inc., the business behind the game’s creation, was established collaboratively by founders Emmerich, Weber, and Jerome Wu – a seasoned project manager from Blizzard-Activision, as well as game developer Tony Tang.

Emmerich is a celebrated movie director who’s known for hits like Independence Day and its follow-up, plus blockbusters that include 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and the 1998 version of Godzilla.

As the CEO of Weber, he’s responsible for creating a variety of films, among them is the techno-dystopian thriller titled “The Thirteenth Floor.

AAA Web3 gaming

The project, initially backed by $50 million, was designed as a multimedia platform right from the start. To date, the company has created animated shorts centered around the in-game character “Zoey” and the game itself has been released prematurely from its beta phase. At present, it can be downloaded on personal computers.

In terms of its influence in Hollywood, gaming, and Web3, Space Nation stands out as a prominent player. With a $50 million investment and an extensive development plan, it’s making waves in the industry. However, integrating NFTs into MMOs has been challenging to convince mainstream gamers so far.

In the realm of “space opera” video games, Space Nation seems to be partaking, with this genre primarily ruled by titles like Eve Online and, to some extent, No Man’s Sky. Additionally, there’s Eve: Valkyrie, a game taking place in the same universe as Eve Online, boasting an innovative economy using blockchain technology, claimed to enable players to create their own cryptocurrencies.
