As a die-hard fan of the “Independence Day” franchise, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the promised trilogy that Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin had envisioned for years. The thought of continuing the epic saga of humanity’s battle against extraterrestrial invaders was incredibly exciting. However, it seems that the dream of completing the trilogy might not come to fruition due to Disney’s recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which now holds the reins of this beloved franchise.
Roland Emmerich, director of “Independence Day,” had long planned to create a trilogy for this sci-fi franchise with collaborator Dean Devlin. After fans received “Independence Day: Resurgence” in 2016, Emmerich recently shared his doubts about completing the trilogy due to complications from The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. It appears that Disney isn’t actively pursuing the third installment at present. With a 20-year interval between the first and second films, it’s challenging to abandon all hope for the trilogy’s conclusion, but realistically, we shouldn’t anticipate it anytime soon.
Emmerich acknowledged to The Playlist, “Yes, I’ve said before that [‘Will’s character’] died in the second movie. But now, Disney holds the power to decide whether or not to bring Will Smith back for a third film. And that’s an even more challenging situation because they never approved my contract in the first place.”
The release time of “Resurgence” may have contributed to its divided response from audiences and reviewers. Despite the original cast members Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, and Vivica A. Fox rejoining for the sequel, Will Smith chose not to participate. Although Smith was initially planned to be a key figure in the new film, rumors suggest that his obligations to “Suicide Squad” and his lackluster performance in “After Earth” in 2013 were the reasons behind his absence from “Resurgence.”
Last year, Devlin told Yahoo! Entertainment that he and Roland personally penned the scripts without studio compensation. Prior to putting pen to paper, we presented our concept to Will Smith and he was enthusiastic about it, expressing his eagerness to be involved. We crafted not one but two sequels with him in mind and submitted them to the studio. The response was overwhelmingly positive; they praised the scripts as the best first drafts they had ever received.
He went on to explain, “Suddenly, he changed his mind… This took us by surprise. In hindsight, I believe he was apprehensive as his previous sci-fi film had underperformed and he was wary of making sequels. Despite this, he ultimately declined, but the studio insisted on moving forward. Consequently, we found ourselves stuck in development limbo for some time.”
Previously, Emmerich mentioned the possibility of turning the blueprints for a third movie into a series.
In 2021, Emmerich shared with ComicBook his desire to create another installment in the “Independence Day” franchise. He mentioned that they currently possess a streaming service and are seeking new content. He expressed interest in possibly developing a third film or a TV series to continue the storyline.
Stay tuned for updates on the possible future of Independence Day.
