MachineGames’ developer team has confirmed that their action-adventure game titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” was originally intended to be played in first-person view. As shared by GamesRadar, design director Jens Andersson explained this choice during a talk at Develop:Brighton. He stated that for them, it was a natural decision and there was no other option. They are fond of the first-person perspective as it provides an effective way to narrate stories.
He suggested that to truly embody Indiana Jones, one should see things from his perspective, experience the world as he does,” he explained.
Andersson continued his discussion by outlining how the studio could immerse players in an Indiana Jones-like experience during the talk. He referred to this as a complex task while working on the game titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“. Nevertheless, he emphasized that it wasn’t the most challenging aspect of the project.
He mentioned that our goal was to create an immersive experience for you, similar to Indiana Jones. We realized this wouldn’t be easy, but we managed to achieve it, he added. This process took quite a while, however, the most challenging aspect of developing this game wasn’t just the time, but rather various aspects that we didn’t get right until the very end.
Based on Andersson’s statements, it seems clear that MachineGames has a knack for narrating tales from a first-person point of view. This preference has been evident in their work on the Wolfenstein series, starting with Wolfenstein: The New Order in 2014 and extending to Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus in 2017. Even spin-offs like Youngblood and Cyberpilot, developed alongside Arkane Lyon, showcased this style of storytelling.
During an interview preceding the PS5 launch of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer commented on MachineGames’ choice to develop the game in first-person perspective. He mentioned that there were objections within the studio to make it third-person, but he commended them for standing firm with their decision. He emphasized that Microsoft encourages studios to tell their own stories through their unique games.
He expressed his admiration for MachineGames transforming someone else’s IP into something truly distinctive, and he’s eager to see what the team will accomplish in the future. Initially, some people questioned whether it would be first or third person, but upon playing, you become Indy. Looking ahead, I also want to enable our teams to create their own games and franchises. We have plenty of opportunities to share fresh narratives, and I aim to ensure that option is available for us as well.
MachineGames is at present developing an additional content for the game named “The Order of Giants“. This extra content is expected to launch in September, and it will be simultaneously available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In this expansion, players will find themselves back as Indiana Jones, venturing into Rome to delve into its subterranean catacombs.
In the meantime, check out our review of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
