As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of the Indiana Jones series, I must say that I was initially hesitant about “Indiana Jones: The Great Circle.” The misconceptions surrounding it had me worried that it would be another victim of the current cultural climate, where identity politics often overshadow the quality of a game.
However, much like Lara Croft in her tomb-raiding adventures, I’m glad I dug a little deeper and found this hidden gem. The authenticity, attention to detail, and clever puzzles reminded me of the old days when gaming was about exploration and problem-solving rather than following a linear path.
I must admit, I almost missed out on a true masterpiece, all because of a misguided comment by one developer. But hey, who needs a compass when you’ve got Google? Just remember, next time someone tells you the North Star is in the South, don’t trust them blindly! Keep exploring, my fellow adventurers!
More recently, the game titled “Indiana Jones and The Great Circle” has been met with skepticism and criticism upon its release. Yet, after giving it a try myself, I must admit that it turned out to be quite enjoyable!
Many people, including me, believe that the Indiana Jones trilogy stands among the greatest trilogies ever made. The thrilling tales, Indiana’s debatable archaeological practices, and his daring exploits, who didn’t yearn to live out those adventures as a child? From unraveling the enigmas of ancient artifacts and forgotten civilizations he sought in each film, or witnessing him outwit and combat villains, or even encountering terrifying tribes practicing human sacrifice?
For many gaming enthusiasts, Indiana Jones held a unique appeal, much like in the movies. Games developed by LucasArts, such as “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis” or “Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb” for me, aimed to replicate the adventurous essence of the films. Though they managed to echo the movies, they didn’t quite match their level of excitement or lasting impact. However, they did offer exhilarating gaming experiences for fans of the series. Regrettably, these games have largely fallen into obscurity over the years.
The latest movie titled “Dial of Destiny” didn’t resonate with its audience, as suggested by its disappointing box office earnings that actually hurt the franchise more than “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” a film I previously thought was the worst in the series. Consequently, this once-adored franchise has been struggling for quite some time.
Well, can you believe it when Bethesda, an unexpected choice, unveiled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, promising a first-person experience filled with hand-to-hand combat, gunplay, and brain-teasing puzzles starring Indiana Jones himself? It seemed like a wish fulfilled. Might this game breathe new life into the series, sparking nostalgia for longtime Indy enthusiasts?
Surprisingly, the answer is both yes and no—thanks to one fatal flaw: bad marketing.
The Backlash of Ignoring Your Audience
When someone mentions “poor marketing,” it’s often thought to be about the quantity or strategies employed in promoting a product. However, the most common marketing blunder many businesses commit today isn’t about the level of promotion nor the techniques. It’s the neglect to listen to consumers and utilize their input to determine the best way to market a product.
It’s hard to ignore the trend that some subjects and catchphrases are being aggressively pushed in advertising campaigns, which frequently elicits strong disapproval from a large segment of consumers. To make it crystal clear, this consumer resistance isn’t confined to just a few, but is widespread among the majority.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve noticed that marketing strategies have significantly evolved in recent times. For instance, take Dylan Mulvaney’s collaboration with Bud Light or Concord’s emphasis on inclusivity topics. On the other hand, there are missteps like Jaguar’s Copy Nothing ad, which was criticized as an overzealous attempt at ‘woke’ marketing by many viewers. These examples demonstrate the importance of understanding and responding to current social trends in today’s marketing landscape.
The outcomes are quite clear: Concord flopped, resulting in a $200 million loss for Sony at minimum; Anheuser-Busch InBev’s stock plummeted by close to 20% due to Bud Light’s performance, and the response to Jaguar’s campaign has been far from positive.
Due to numerous instances like these, it’s straightforward to examine past marketing blunders as a guide on what strategies to avoid. Unfortunately, terms such as “modern audience” or “diversity” are frequently misapplied, resulting in the exact opposite effect – estrangement instead of inclusion. Regrettably, marketing teams appear to be slow in absorbing these lessons.
When Words Alienate: The Impact of Misguided Messaging
I’ve noticed that consumers are increasingly attuned to identifying problematic patterns and trends in products. As a result, they are becoming more cautious and avoiding items that contain certain phrases or themes like “modern audience tropes” or “woke influences.
Unfortunately, the team behind Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn’t seem to get the memo.
Consumers might feel apprehensive upon learning that the game is designed for a “contemporary demographic” or intended for a “current crowd.
Title for contemporary gamers: “Indiana Jones: The Grand Circular Quest”
Regarding the game’s monetization, it is essential to know the amount of content that requires real-world currency (pay-to-play) in this title.

In simpler terms, the narrative designer, Ed Curtis-Sivess, expressed that they now have a chance to create a fresh Indiana Jones adventure tailored for today’s video game players. However, his statement sparked some concern.
To numerous users, such phrasing can give the impression that the game might be attempting to cater to an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEI) storyline, which has historically been perceived as dismissive or disrespectful by both consumers and critics alike.
During one of the promotional events, it was noticed that Curtis donned a rainbow shirt. Although this detail might seem irrelevant, it led some individuals to presume he conformed to the stereotype of an overly-political fan who criticizes gamers and consumers for shunning low-quality products. In my opinion, he’s likely just a good-hearted individual caught up in circumstances beyond his power to control.
Initially, I too avoided Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as the marketing campaign appeared poorly managed. The previews and trailers felt underwhelming and uninspiring, suggesting that the developers might not have grasped effective marketing strategies. However, contrary to these first impressions, the game is anything but dull.
Only after my enthusiastic Indiana Jones-loving friend encouraged me and a favorable review from a trusted game critic convinced me, did I finally decide to give it a go.
To my surprise, I discovered that this might be one of the best games I’ve played in 2024.
Immersion and Authenticity: The Strengths of The Great Circle
Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is, in my opinion, a great game.
This game offers an engaging puzzle experience without excessive guidance, coupled with a robust, authentic hand-to-hand combat feature and a commendable stealth function – both presented in a first-person perspective, surprisingly effective to say the least.
Each encounter feels effortlessly integrated and engaging, while the settings, meticulously crafted, enhance the entire journey.
As a lifelong gamer who has often felt that the industry can be too quick to jump on the “wokeness” bandwagon, I was pleasantly surprised by this game. Unlike many others, it didn’t feel like it was trying to push a message down my throat or check off diversity boxes for the sake of appearances. In fact, I couldn’t find any forced messaging in the game at all.
I’ve played countless games where characters are shoehorned into the narrative just to meet some arbitrary representation quota, but that wasn’t the case here. The characters felt genuine and well-integrated into the storyline. And yes, there were a couple of characters who were presumed to have same-sex attractions, but their inclusion didn’t feel forced or unrealistic in the way that it often does in other games and films today.
Overall, I appreciate the game’s approach to representation and would love to see more developers take this thoughtful and authentic approach in the future. As a gamer who values good storytelling over political correctness, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone looking for a well-crafted gaming experience that doesn’t sacrifice substance for sensationalism.
In this conversation, the revelation about the person they’re seeking caring for Indiana comes across as sincere and organic. It isn’t instigated by Indiana herself, but rather a different character who casually shares this information with her friend. This dialogue hints at a deeper history between the two, but it has no connection to Indiana Jones. This added authenticity stems from its seemingly unrelated nature to Indiana Jones himself.
One delightful aspect for me is that only those speaking directly to Indiana Jones use English, as he is the one who communicates in this language.
It was pleasing to listen to characters in the game speaking their native languages, like an Italian NPC speaking Italian, a German soldier speaking German, and even the villains communicating in German or Italian during cutscenes. This level of authenticity and careful attention to detail felt much more genuine than the often-used English with poor accents that many games resort to for the convenience of players.
The riddles and enigmas are genuinely enjoyable to solve. As previously stated, this game doesn’t hold your hand like a young child learning to walk. Instead, it encourages you to listen, explore, and figure things out on your own. It was invigorating to find a game that has faith in its players to tackle a genuine challenge.
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the combat system of this game truly stood out for me. The shooting mechanics, while not the primary focus of the game, are quite commendable. What I appreciated most was the attention to realistic details, such as the need to carefully reload your weapon, which added a layer of authenticity that I found immersive. Interestingly, it wasn’t often that I was thrust into shooting scenarios, but when I was, the game managed to keep me engaged without overwhelming me. Overall, this game is a testament to the fact that great things can come in unexpected packages.
As a cinephile, I found myself captivated by this cinematic masterpiece that offers an immersive experience where I, as the protagonist, hold the reins of decision-making. The narrative provides multiple paths to navigate situations, be it through covert stealth maneuvers, engaging in brutal hand-to-hand combat, or resorting to strategic gunplay – truly making each playthrough a unique cinematic journey.
As a lifelong cinephile who’s spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of films and storytelling, I can wholeheartedly say that the disguise mechanic and the abundance of side quests in this game truly elevate the experience. It’s not just about fetching random items or completing mundane tasks; these side quests are thoughtfully crafted, engaging, and deeply interwoven with the narrative. They add a layer of depth and richness to the game that I find utterly captivating, making each journey feel like a truly immersive cinematic adventure.
The Great Circle: A Hidden Gem Overshadowed by Misconceptions
Personally speaking, having grown up watching the original Indiana Jones trilogy, Indiana Jones: The Great Circle stands out to me as a worthy successor. I’ve played many games in the genre, but this one truly resonates with my memories of the films and offers an experience that is on par with them. In my book, it’s a must-play for any fan who cherishes the spirit of Indiana Jones.
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Temple of Doom – While I considered placing The Great Circle at number three, Troy Baker’s phenomenal voice acting as Indiana Jones, perfectly capturing the essence of Harrison Ford, makes it feel like you’re playing Ford himself. However, Temple of Doom edges it out slightly since it features Ford in the flesh.
- Indiana Jones: The Great Circle
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Like many fans, I didn’t find the fourth film in the series as compelling, and we all know it.
- There’s no such thing as the Dial of Destiny…that garbage simply doesn’t exist in my book.
It’s unfortunate that the game was misjudged as being centered around Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI). However, I firmly think that this is a game worth experiencing, especially for Indiana Jones enthusiasts. I owe a great debt of gratitude to my passionate (and perhaps slightly eccentric) friend who persuaded me to give it a try.
In simpler terms, I’d give this game a 3.8/5 if we were fully evaluating it. Despite being quite good, its lack of recognition and widespread appeal can be attributed to subpar marketing efforts and an unfortunate comment from one of the developers that may have unintentionally turned people off.
I thoroughly recommend playing this game.
Hey there fellow movie enthusiast! Ever had the chance to embark on an adventure with Indiana Jones in ‘Indiana Jones and The Great Circle’? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. And if the reason you haven’t given it a spin is because you thought it delved into identity politics, I’d be curious to know why you felt that way. After all, every film offers its own unique perspective and narrative!
