A PlayStation 1 game, originally intended for release in 1995, is finally available to play after being lost for 30 years. Before games were primarily made for consoles and PCs, many started as arcade games. Iconic franchises like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Mario Bros. all gained popularity this way. This game followed the same path – it was first an arcade hit – but the planned PlayStation version was unfortunately canceled. Now, after three decades, fans can finally experience this long-lost title on today’s consoles.
This week marks the release of Namco’s The Outfoxies as part of the “Arcade Archives” series. Originally appearing in Japanese arcades in 1995, The Outfoxies is a fast-paced 2D fighting game where players battle each other using weapons found on each stage. The gameplay is quick, chaotic, and quite unique. While a PlayStation version was announced in 1995, it was never released, likely because the arcade game didn’t achieve the popularity Namco expected. Now, fans can finally enjoy the game on a new platform for $14.99.
This PS1 Game Inspired a Major Series
The game The Outfoxies is best known for being a major influence on Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. While the two games have different styles, the similarities are clear, particularly the importance of weapons in battles. It’s possible Super Smash Bros. wouldn’t have existed on the Nintendo 64 without The Outfoxies, and that would mean losing one of the most beloved fighting game series ever created.
If you’d like to experience a historically significant and influential game, The Outfoxies is definitely worth playing, especially with this new release. You can find Arcade Archives: The Outfoxies now on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
