From a young age, Tammy Slaton had a unique slant on what she wanted to be when she grew up.
Even though they started with very little, Tammy knew she and her sister Amy had the potential to achieve their goals.
Tammy remembers telling her sister, Amy, when they were around three or four years old, that they were destined for something big. She said they were going to become famous on television and make a name for themselves, as she shared on a June episode of the Creative Chaos podcast from Ezell Film Company.
Amy, now 38, shared that she and her siblings – Chris, Misty, and Amanda – had a difficult childhood in Kentucky. Growing up, they were very poor and relied heavily on fast food or food provided by their church. Their mother, Darlene, worked three jobs to support the five children, but Amy said they didn’t receive much emotional support. Instead, she recalls being frequently criticized and told she and her siblings were unintelligent and lazy, as she revealed on the first episode of their TLC show, 1000-lb Sisters, in 2020.
Despite facing hardship, the sisters were very close to their grandmother. She died when Amy was ten years old and Tammy was eleven.
Tammy explained that her grandmother was a hugely important figure in her life, making her feel normal and accepted. She also shared that after her grandmother passed away, food became the family’s only source of comfort and happiness.
But as their weight crept up, Tammy and Amy experienced bullying and a slew of medical issues.
Tammy shared that she’d struggled with her weight her entire life. She remembered being bullied as a child, with kids pushing her around and making fun of her. By the time she was 20, she weighed around 500 pounds.

It was right after a health scare in 2014 that she decided to start vlogging with Amy.
In a 2023 interview with People, Tammy explained that she was recovering at home after being hospitalized for a blood clot in her right lung. Feeling bored while watching YouTube, she thought, ‘Why not us?’ and decided to try creating her own content. She then shared the idea with her partner, leading to where they are today.
Their journey to the small screen began when their videos caught the attention of execs at TLC.
“At first, they wanted a big YouTuber weight loss show,” Amy told the magazine, “and then they’d seen us and they were like, ‘No, these two need their own show.'”
The show 1000-lb Sisters first aired on January 1st, 2020. Over the last seven seasons, viewers have watched Tammy, Amy, and their family members make significant changes to their health and lose a lot of weight.
Tammy once weighed 725 pounds, as she shared with People magazine. However, after entering a rehabilitation program, adopting a healthier lifestyle, and having weight-loss surgery in 2022, she’s lost over 500 pounds.
Tammy, who previously shared details of her 2025 skin removal surgery, explained that sharing personal experiences helps others. She believes it shows people they’re not alone in their weight loss journeys and provides comfort and encouragement, and she’s grateful to know her story can bring joy to others.
The show not only follows the Slatons’ weight loss progress, but also realistically portrays the challenges and triumphs they face as a family. Despite some difficult moments – even arguments with her sister Amy and others – Tammy doesn’t regret having them filmed.
She shared on the Creative Chaos podcast that she wouldn’t trade any part of her life, even the arguments she had with her siblings. She believes those conflicts helped them all grow and shaped who she is today. While she acknowledges the family fights happened, she’s moved past that stage and doesn’t want to repeat it now that she’s older.
Even as adults, siblings still fight, and a preview of the show’s eighth season (premiering January 6th) shows the sisters continuing to clash.
Tammy confessed in an interview that she feels like she and Amy are growing distant. She explained that Amy used to be her closest friend.
In a preview clip, Amy explained she’d reached her limit with her former best friend, Tammy, saying, “I can’t deal with her anymore. I’m done.” This is why Amy didn’t ask her sister to be her maid of honor when she married Brian Lovvorn in October.

The changing relationship between the siblings is only one of the things that has altered for them over the last six years.
Tammy has been responding to fans’ questions online – she shared she’d had teeth removed after a follower noticed bruising on her chin last August – but she doesn’t seem to mind when people approach her in person.
She explained that she doesn’t object to people asking before taking photos, as she understands it’s part of the job. However, she dislikes it when people are impolite and just take pictures without asking. She emphasized that she’s a person and appreciates basic courtesy.
Tammy has faced criticism about her looks in the past, but she appreciates all the people who have supported her.
“I love it,” she added. “I got amazing fans.”
And, as for the other vocal keyboard warrors, she noted, “Haters make me famous.”
Tammy Slaton has always been open about her life on camera, but she’s kept certain parts, like her relationships, private. Recently, she revealed she’s been dating Andrea Dalton, two years after the passing of her husband, Caleb Willingham, in 2023.
During an April 2025 episode of 1,000-lb Sisters, the reality star shared that she previously identified as pansexual. However, following the death of her partner, Caleb, she no longer has an interest in dating men.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always thrilled to see people find happiness, and Tammy’s recent announcement is truly heartwarming! She shared the wonderful news of her engagement to Andrea in June, and honestly, it feels like a beautiful new chapter for her. She’s told me she’s not just excited about her fiancé and the ring, but also incredibly grateful for everything life has brought her so far. It’s a lovely reminder to appreciate the journey, isn’t it?
Tammy shared a TikTok post in July with a collection of photos, writing that she’s grown and changed a lot over time. She expressed gratitude for the love and support of her fans, her girlfriend, and her family, saying they’ve helped her stay strong.
