Inside Benicio del Toro’s Private World as Dad to Daughter Delilah

It’s not as if Benicio del Toro went anywhere, but now he’s noticeably everywhere.

It’s no surprise, given it’s awards season, that the 2026 Oscar nominee has been making the rounds at events. He recently attended the Actor Awards with his daughter, Delilah, after receiving praise for his memorable supporting role as a secret activist and karate teacher in the film One Battle After Another.

It’s interesting to consider how different the role of the calm and collected sensei, Sergio St. Carlos, was for Del Toro. He plays a key part in helping Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Bob Ferguson, find his daughter, Willa, played by Chase Infiniti.

Probably not far.

The role was specifically written for Benicio Del Toro by director Paul Thomas Anderson, and Del Toro later made significant contributions that ultimately shaped the entire film’s atmosphere.

Del Toro explained that his character’s introduction involved a death within his dojo. He told director Paul Thomas Anderson, or ‘PTA,’ that if his character committed this act, he wouldn’t be available to drive Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Del Toro proposed they’d need to deal with the body and thoroughly clean—or even burn down—the dojo as a result, as he shared during a December interview with The Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope Oscar Actors Roundtable.

It really struck me when he said, ‘I started asking myself, why am I even doing this?’ And from that simple question, things completely shifted. He realized, and we all did, that this wasn’t about taking lives at all – it was about something else entirely. It was a huge turning point, honestly.

Benicio Del Toro has a natural confidence that he brings to every role, a swagger he’s earned over almost four decades in Hollywood. He’s proven his talent, winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in the 2000 film Traffic, and recently appeared in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme.

Though Benicio Del Toro commands attention in every film he appears in, he prefers to keep his personal life private, only discussing himself when necessary for movie promotion.

Which he doesn’t really do even then.

He recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he avoids interviews because things often get misinterpreted. “It’s unsettling when what’s reported isn’t what you intended to say,” he said, “and it feels like those misinterpretations stick with you forever.”

He described the recent attention as “bizarre” but also said it was “an honor” to receive recognition for Oppenheimer, which has been nominated for 13 Academy Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on March 15th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Del Toro described the experience as massive and unexpected. He admitted being reluctant to fully accept it, choosing instead to embrace the moment and let things unfold naturally. He realized there was no point in trying to control the situation, as it was beyond his influence.

The event allowed him to share a special moment with his daughter, offering a rare glimpse into his life as a father to a girl.

In the case of Delilah, her mom is the wonderful Kimberly Stewart, and it’s interesting to note that she and Delilah’s father weren’t actually together as a couple when Delilah was born. It’s a testament to how families are beautifully diverse these days.

I was so happy to hear the news about Kristen Stewart’s pregnancy back in April 2011! The official statement said Robert Pattinson, her Usual Suspects co-star, was being incredibly supportive. Even though they weren’t together as a couple anymore, they were both really excited about welcoming the baby. It was a surprisingly positive announcement, considering the circumstances.

In a 2015 interview with HELLO!, Rod Stewart shared that having his daughter Delilah, who was born on August 21st – his own birthday – came at the perfect moment in his life. He explained that he’d already enjoyed his years of partying and was now eager to focus solely on being a father. He’s been a full-time stay-at-home mom since her birth and cherishes every moment.

She explained that her four-year-old daughter was both spirited and well-mannered, thanks to early lessons in politeness—she consistently used ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

At the time, Stewart—Rod Stewart’s second of eight children—explained she was casually dating, but hadn’t met anyone she wanted Delilah to know yet.

Delilah was Rod Stewart’s first grandchild, and he shared with TopMob magazine upon her birth that he was incredibly happy – his joy was beyond words.

Rod explained that everyone at the hospital was working together to support Kimberly. He added that while they don’t always see eye-to-eye, they generally work well together.

Everyone included Del Toro, who has remained close to Stewart—and her family—as a co-parent.

He explained to the New Zealand Herald in 2016 that he prefers to keep a low profile these days. Becoming a father, he said, completely changed his priorities, as he now focuses on the well-being and future of the child he loves.

Del Toro generally keeps his personal life private, but with a family history in entertainment—he joked to Port magazine in 2015 that he might even show his Oscar to his daughter—he’s been getting ready for the possibility that she’ll follow in his footsteps. He playfully noted his grandfather didn’t have an Oscar, but he might!

He initially told TopMob in 2015 that he thought she’d become a teacher, joking that she enjoyed giving him instructions. However, he’s since started to believe Delilah might actually follow his career path.

Guillermo del Toro explained that his family wasn’t involved in the entertainment industry, which made them anxious about his career choice. He comes from a family of professionals in other fields, and they worried about the instability of working in film and theater, as he shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in June 2025.

He explained that he’d support his daughter no matter what she chose to do. Whether she wanted to be a lawyer, a designer, or anything else, he was fine with it. However, he emphasized that if she decided she wanted to be an actress, she absolutely needed to pursue that dream.

So, perhaps consider their father-daughter date at the Actor Awards a trial run for the teen.
