John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette experienced difficulties in their marriage, and by July 1999, their relationship was facing another crisis.
According to Edward Klein’s 2002 book, The Kennedy Curse, John reportedly said to a friend after checking into the Stanhope hotel, “It’s all falling apart! Everything is falling apart!”
Despite telling a friend, during one of his numerous phone calls from his New York City hotel, that he and Carolyn had grown distant and might divorce, most people who knew them thought they would have ultimately resolved their issues.
If they hadn’t died, along with Carolyn’s sister Lauren Bessette, in a plane crash on July 16, 1999, off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, while John was piloting the single-engine aircraft.
According to RoseMarie Terenzio, in her 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral History (co-authored with Liz McNeil), John and Carolyn Kennedy were having a difficult time, arguing frequently and struggling to communicate with each other.
But, she noted, “they were not living apart. Regardless of what other people say.”
FX’s nine-part series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, which ends on March 26th, doesn’t stick strictly to the real timeline of their relationship and the problems they faced. The eighth episode jumps quickly from Carolyn being deeply affected by the death of Princess Diana in August 1997 to a major argument with John that leads him to take a temporary stay at the Stanhope Hotel, promising to be back in “just a day or two.”
Throughout the show, the character uses crutches, mirroring a real-life injury John sustained when his paraglider crashed into some bushes over Memorial Day weekend. He broke his left ankle and wore a cast for six weeks. His doctor advised him to avoid flying solo for at least ten days after the cast was removed on July 15, 1999.

According to Sasha Chermayeff, a close friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., the early years of his relationship were a period of discovery, where the initial excitement gave way to a clearer understanding of the challenges ahead. Chermayeff notes that things became difficult, despite a strong connection between the couple. As detailed in Steven Gillon’s 2019 biography, America’s Reluctant Prince, the future of their relationship remains unknown.
On July 13th, John traveled to Toronto by plane, accompanied by a flight instructor, to discuss funding for his magazine, George, which was facing financial difficulties.

According to Keith Stein, a Canadian executive, John F. Kennedy Jr. often spoke about having children as if it were about to happen. As Elizabeth Beller writes in her 2024 book, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Wife of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, he frequently mentioned his wife, Carolyn, and it was obvious they shared a close and loving relationship. She was clearly very important to him.
According to Beller, the couple had an argument later that day because Carolyn didn’t want to attend the July 17th wedding of her boyfriend’s cousin, Rory Kennedy. Rory was the youngest of Robert F. Kennedy’s eleven children and was born after his father’s assassination in 1968. The wedding took place in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
Despite the previous events, when the couple held a breakfast event for the Robin Hood foundation at the George offices the next day, John told reporters who asked about his political ambitions, “I’m happy with how things are and I enjoy my life.”

That afternoon, Lauren and Carolyn met John for a somewhat awkward lunch at the Stanhope. During the meeting, Lauren urged Carolyn to attend Rory’s wedding with John and made plans for them to give her a ride to Martha’s Vineyard on the way.
The brief period of peace between John and Carolyn Kennedy didn’t last long. According to an eyewitness who spoke with author C. David Heymann for American Legacy: The Story of John and Caroline Kennedy, the couple would switch between affectionate kisses and heated arguments. Carolyn suggested they spend the weekend looking at houses on Cape Cod, but John told her he was too busy.
Later that day, people overheard John yelling at Carolyn on the phone at his office. However, George, the executive editor Richard Blow, later told Vanity Fair that this didn’t necessarily mean they were getting divorced. He explained that anyone who knew John’s temper or Carolyn’s strong will wouldn’t have been surprised by a disagreement, and those who had witnessed them reconcile after fights knew how quickly they could resolve issues.
On July 15th, John attended a Yankees game with his friend Gary Ginsberg. In a 2024 interview, Ginsberg remembered that John seemed most concerned about the financial difficulties of someone named George.
Gary explained that his friend didn’t want a divorce. He described him as someone who was loyal and committed, and didn’t give up easily.
In her 2012 book, Fairy Tale Interrupted, RoseMarie recounted advising her employer to prioritize his marriage over his work with the magazine. She also remembered urging Carolyn, who was unsure about the wedding trip, that she absolutely needed to go, explaining that it wasn’t the right moment to object.

Just before his flight, Richard remembered John struggling to walk after lunch the previous day.
I noticed John was already tired from just walking from the restaurant and looked at him with doubt, he continued. “Don’t worry,” John reassured me, “I’m flying with an instructor.”
“Just don’t crash, okay?” Richard quipped. John assured him, “I’ll be fine.”
But John ended up telling the instructor to go home rather than make the late trip.
In her 2024 book, RoseMarie recounted that it was common for him to say he’d fly solo, as he’d done it before. She explained that she simply left a pink sticky note with a message: ‘Meet Lauren in the lobby at 6:00.’ That was all she did.
John showed his sister-in-law around the George offices, then drove her to Essex County Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey. The trip should have taken about 40 minutes, but heavy Friday evening traffic meant they didn’t get there until 8:10 p.m. Carolyn, who had just gotten a pedicure and purchased a dress for Rory’s wedding at Saks Fifth Avenue, soon arrived in a car RoseMarie had arranged for her.
According to Beller, Carolyn mentioned to a sales clerk at Saks that John’s cast had just been taken off. She wasn’t sure if he was up for flying yet. When the clerk wished her well, Carolyn responded that she appreciated it, as she had a feeling she’d need the good wishes.
John’s single-engine Piper Saratoga and was cleared for take-off at 8:38 p.m.

The hazy weather that night made it impossible for John to see any ground lights. As pilot Tom Freeman explained to Christopher Andersen in his book The Good Son: JFK Jr. and the Mother He Loved, flying without trusting your instruments is frightening. “You’re completely in the dark—both literally and figuratively,” Freeman said, describing it as a “sickening, scary feeling.”
Radar data obtained by TIME shows the plane began descending rapidly at 9:26 p.m., losing 700 feet in altitude every minute.
At 9:38 p.m., John turned right and headed south. The plane then rose steadily, reaching 2,200 feet after 30 seconds and climbing to 2,500 feet another 30 seconds later, while continuing southeast. Roughly a minute after that, it climbed to 2,600 feet, turned left, and began a rapid descent, losing 900 feet in altitude each minute.
The plane ultimately plunged toward the water at a rate of 5,000 feet per minute.
A 2000 report by the National Transportation Safety Board determined the plane crashed because the pilot likely lost control due to becoming disoriented in space.
According to aviation consultant John Nance, this phenomenon is the brain’s difficulty determining if you’re upright without visual references, and it can happen to any pilot. While most pilots can compensate for it, John Kennedy apparently could not.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recalled learning at 3 a.m. on July 17th that John’s plane had officially gone missing. In a 2013 diary entry, he wrote that the water temperature was 68 degrees, leading some to hope for survivors, but he personally had no such hope.

Later that day, a black garment bag belonging to Lauren was found on the beach. Still attached to it was the Morgan Stanley business card she’d been using as a luggage tag.
Navy divers found the remains of John, Carolyn, and Lauren on July 21st. Investigators concluded they died instantly in the crash, which happened just 20 miles from the western end of Martha’s Vineyard.
To avoid their final resting place becoming a popular tourist spot, the Bessette and Kennedy families chose to scatter the ashes of the three at sea.
See all the ways Love Story faithfully chronicled true events, and where it got extra-creative:

Carolyn is feeling more and more alone in her Tribeca apartment, worn out by the constant attention of the paparazzi and upset by the untrue and sensational stories in the tabloids – they’ve claimed she’s depressed, using drugs, or even pregnant. When she hears about Princess Diana’s death in a car accident, she’s devastated and can’t look away from the television. Meanwhile, John worries about whether the dishes are clean and then goes for a run.
Carolyn recalls that despite Diana doing everything correctly and posing for all the photos the paparazzi wanted, they still pursued her relentlessly, ultimately leading to the crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

John later confessed to his wife that he feared she might become a recluse, and he was also terrified that if he began watching the news about Princess Diana’s death, he wouldn’t be able to turn it off.
In person, John attempted to get the Queen to appear on the cover of George magazine, but she respectfully refused. Carolyn attended the funeral of fashion designer Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22, 1997, and happened to be seated near Princess Diana. Biz Mitchell, who was the executive editor of George at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter that John was hesitant to cover Diana’s death. Ultimately, they published a powerful photo essay documenting the public’s mourning in London.
Carolyn was deeply affected by the Princess of Wales’s death. John confided in his friend Billy Noonan, saying he wasn’t sure how to help her because she was very shaken up.
In her 2017 memoir, Jackie’s Girl, Kathy McKeon, who was Jacqueline Kennedy’s assistant, described a family dinner in Hyannis Port following Princess Diana’s funeral. McKeon recalls that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy expressed strong dislike for the paparazzi who constantly followed her, reportedly saying she “hated those bastards.”
She said, according to McKeon, that she felt like yelling at them, explaining they had gotten very close to her as they followed her inside.
To which John said, “You gotta just take it easy. Relax.”

After John’s dinner party – which he presented as being for Carolyn’s friends, a description she disliked, pointing out they were friends of both of them – a major argument erupts between the couple as Carolyn clears the table.
There was some tension as John joked that he was glad he hadn’t met Carolyn’s mother, implying she wouldn’t approve of their relationship. Carolyn responded that he only contacted her when necessary, just to avoid conflict, and added that she believed it must be difficult for him to face the unhappiness he causes her.
Their argument is completely destructive. She claims he doesn’t give her enough room to breathe, and he accuses her of defining herself solely by her problems. Ultimately, John announces he’s going to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, exhausted by the look in her eyes that tells him he’s not succeeding in their marriage.
She begs him not to leave, and he promises he’ll be back.
If this is the check-in at the Stanhope Hotel two days before the plane crash on July 16, 1999, it would mean the events of Love Story happened almost two years later than previously thought. Despite a difficult final few weeks, the couple still enjoyed travel, parties, and some happiness during their almost three years together.
As Beller pointed out, negative stories about their relationship – rumors of trouble or unhappiness – consistently generated more media attention, especially when paired with photos of Carolyn looking distressed. This pattern continued throughout their lives.

Just before things got tense, John proposed they go out, but Carolyn gently reminded him to rest, since he was recovering from a crash with his Buckeye powered parachute and was still using crutches.
She adds, “Didn’t you promise Caroline you were done flying?”
This scene, like many others in the series, subtly reminds us of the characters’ ultimate destination and the direction their relationship is taking, with recurring references to airplanes and flight.
John was still recovering from a broken ankle when he took that flight. He’d broken his right ankle in May 1999 after crashing an ultralight parachute, and was still using crutches.
In his 2004 book, The Kennedy Curse, Edward Klein wrote that Jacqueline Kennedy Begley strongly urged her son not to pursue a pilot’s license. She reportedly said, “Please don’t do it,” explaining that the family had already experienced too many tragic deaths.

In the seventh episode, titled “Obsession,” the newly married couple returns from their honeymoon in Turkey to discover a large group of photographers camped outside their New York City apartment, and they refuse to go away.
Things were genuinely as awful as they seemed. Paparazzi relentlessly followed Carolyn, constantly trying to get her to smile for the cameras. When she refused to respond to their intrusive questions – including personal ones about pregnancy – some began to insult her, hoping to provoke a reaction.
According to MJ Bettenhausen, as recounted in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she and John Kennedy got married. Bettenhausen felt this expectation was another way Carolyn’s independent nature was restricted.

As a huge fan of Love Story, I was so impressed with how meticulously costume designer Rudy Mance recreated the Prada outfit Carolyn wore when she first faced the paparazzi after returning home with John. It was a perfect match – a really thoughtful detail!
The woman’s outfit – a camel-colored pencil skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag – mirrored her personality: stylish and sophisticated, yet understated.
Mance shared on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. He explained they spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was very worried, but John tried to improve things outside their house. He asked the photographers to be respectful of his wife and give her some privacy as she got used to her new life.
According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and requested that the media respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.
According to Steve Gillon’s 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John and the photographers ended as soon as he and Carolyn began walking to their car. The photographers immediately rushed forward, each trying to get a unique photo, which terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview seemed to go perfectly. However, she discovered a crowd of photographers and fans gathered outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly declined the job offer.
Although there’s no official record of Carolyn Bessette nearly working for him, Ralph Lauren was reportedly very impressed with her fashion sense. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he even instructed his design team to consider her style in all their work, saying, “Every time you design something, think of Carolyn Bessette.”

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, asking her to visit her estate, Hickory Hill, in Virginia.
Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that, unfortunately, people wouldn’t be inclined to believe her side of the story anymore. She explained that men could be incredibly hurtful, pushing her to the brink, and urged her not to let them win.
Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn she needed to ignore the negativity and move forward.
According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once shared that being a member of the Kennedy family came with its challenges. However, the mother of eleven explained that she learned a crucial lesson for coping: each morning, she would look in the mirror and affirm, ‘I am enough.’ It was a simple practice, but she found that repeating this affirmation eventually instilled a deep sense of self-worth, something no one – not even the Kennedys – could diminish.
Ethel cautioned Carolyn against losing her temper in public again, as described in the book. She warned that these men were quick to anger and advised Carolyn not to let them provoke her into behaving badly in front of everyone.

Carolyn shares with her sister, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking Caroline to be her maid of honor. She explains that Caroline seemed really upset about being left out of the wedding planning and she wants to include her.
Carolyn worries that her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important because she doesn’t want any lingering resentment to affect her wedding and marriage.
Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”
John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend things after a disagreement. John’s sister had blamed Carolyn for a public scene and even questioned whether they should get married. John believed having Carolyn ask Caroline was the best way to resolve the situation.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal issues were interfering with her work, and he confessed he was surprised and a little hurt by her decision.
He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez—a former colleague—designing her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.
“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by the details behind iconic moments, and the story of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s wedding is no exception. You might remember in the movie Love Story, someone spills the beans about the dress because Carolyn had been seen with designer Narciso Rodriguez and Caroline Kennedy. But the real story is actually quite different! In real life, Carolyn actually left her job before fully diving into wedding planning – a detail often overlooked!

Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her upcoming marriage. She expresses this worry privately to Carolyn, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a toast at the rehearsal dinner.
Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned about Carolyn. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded around someone with such a strong personality. Ultimately, she hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive when she needs him.
John had a private conversation with his future mother-in-law, telling her that her daughter means everything to him.
Although the specifics of what Ann said that night are unclear, John’s friend Robert Littell recalled in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it might not be what her daughter needed.
And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”
Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed hours earlier. This means the romantic scene in the movie Love Story – where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding – was actually a fictional addition created for dramatic effect.

Carolyn faced a real panic when she discovered she’d have to pull Narciso’s dress—which didn’t have a zipper—over her head after her makeup was already finished.
Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that getting Carolyn into her dress was incredibly difficult. She described it as if the dress was flowing like cream over Carolyn’s body, and Narciso was struggling to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the dress’s neckline, and they even used a scarf to protect Carolyn’s hair and makeup while doing so.
Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he even provided a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy and the day goes smoothly.
In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony didn’t begin until 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles.

In the fifth episode, John proposes to Carolyn while they’re out on a rowboat, shortly after she’s met his family for the first time in Hyannis Port. This includes his formidable aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper), who clearly runs the family.
Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.
In 1994, Per Beller and John brought Carolyn to the family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John signed up to help with breakfast that weekend, but didn’t ask Carolyn to join him.
Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard for the Fourth of July in 1995. He playfully told her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner,” when he asked her to marry him.
He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but in reality, John asked Jackie’s close friend Maurice Tempelsman to create a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring, often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.
According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before she responded to a proposal. While J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book, American Prince, states she didn’t explicitly say yes but was seen wearing an engagement ring and telling friends of their plans to marry, RoseMarie Terenzio recalls Carolyn telling her they became engaged over the holiday weekend.
Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months before their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and she also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.
In the movie Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) challenges Calvin when he tells her she’ll have to stop working for him. This happens after a New York Post cover announces JFK Jr.’s engagement, and Calvin worries her personal life will interfere with her job.
Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets.” Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”
The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, framing it as a final outing and subtly revealing their relationship was ending.
Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and would live apart while working through any problems respectfully. Their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.
At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than Calvin.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a playfully suggestive image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.
She watched the news from home, understanding that John had no option but to deny proposing. She didn’t want rumors about her rejecting him to distract from the important news about George.
Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for releasing a statement to deny engagement rumors fueled by a photo of Carolyn’s ring, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her presence would be a distraction. They also claimed she wasn’t bothered by not being there.
John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff believed this moment was an early indication of the challenges Carolyn would face throughout their relationship – a foreshadowing of what life with John would be like.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with a tearful Carolyn saying yes to John’s marriage proposal.
As a longtime follower of John and Carolyn’s story, I remember the fallout from their fight on February 25th, 1996, being everywhere. So much of it – John appearing to take Carolyn’s engagement ring, him crying on the curb, their shouting match while she held onto the dog – it all felt like it was pulled straight from the newspapers and TV reports. I specifically remember the dramatic moment when she grabbed the dog’s leash and yelled, “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!” It was a really public and painful time.
The show centers around a fight sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his marriage proposal—he angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just said yes—even though they’d actually been engaged for around five months. The series reveals that Carolyn secretly tried on the ring and indicated she was open to marrying him privately, but hadn’t formally accepted before the argument began.
In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because John’s friends were taking advantage of him.
At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the “Vows” column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she’d been trying to shield him from being exploited.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.
Although it looked good on television, the real John was often forgetful and frequently lost his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.
Okay, so here’s a little detail that really struck me. John invited Carolyn to what he presented as just a party, but it was actually a formal sit-down dinner – a surprise birthday celebration for his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg! He didn’t let Carolyn in on the secret beforehand, which I think adds a fascinating layer to the whole situation.
When John’s behavior worries Carolyn, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that he’s just forgetful, and not intentionally bringing home unexpected guests.

John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, the event was a party held at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment, not a formal dinner.
The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend as entering the secure room with a glowing and uniquely authentic presence, and acting with warm, spontaneous affection.
Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.
Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time, reveals that initial impressions of Carolyn and Caroline not getting along were incorrect. Someone who saw them having lunch described a lively and enjoyable conversation filled with laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to get a date with him – that she was actively pursuing him. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was deeply upset he’d believe such a thing, so she left.
After what felt like a long wait, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him confessing his love for her, something he hadn’t said before.
According to Beller, John received a letter outlining claims about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships, but this happened relatively early in their dating history. The book details how John abruptly ended their relationship after receiving the letter, following a summer of dating in 1992. Carolyn then didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

The new series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, opens with Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advising actress Annette Bening (played by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.
It’s unknown if she created the look for Warren Beatty’s future wife, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was Calvin Klein’s main salesperson for famous clients, including Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.
According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she would help customers find clothes that suited them, offer styling advice, and ultimately, sell a significant amount of merchandise – reportedly millions of dollars worth over time. He described it as a truly positive experience.
In a scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her sharp instincts by advising Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.
Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give Calvin her phone number, reminding him he can reach her at work.
“He was simply bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub, just as Michael Bergin, whom they playfully called the “sexy doorman” (and who was actually Noah Fearnley), walked up to join them.
John suddenly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.
According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. He was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. John then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, according to her friend MJ Bettenhausen, but Carolyn initially thought he was with another woman and declined when he later invited her to an after-party.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, dated casually starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was mostly on-and-off, according to Beller’s book.
In his 2004 book, The Other Man, Bergin claimed he continued a sexual relationship with Carolyn even after she met John, and up until her death. However, according to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted this claim.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. She’s about to leave after waiting for 20 minutes when he finally arrives, riding up on his bicycle.
He accidentally leaves the car unlocked, and when they return from their long date, they discover it’s been stolen. This means he ends up walking Carolyn home instead.
He said he wished he hadn’t rushed, as they reached her doorstep. “More time for what?” she asked, and he kissed her. He then wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.
In real life, John and this person likely had a first date, and it’s possible John biked there and was a little late. However, the scene of them connecting over drinks was probably staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) is at John’s apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen), that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.
He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, being strongly against it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers through a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.
John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and eventually confessed to her at an event that he was struggling emotionally because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded by saying she didn’t know him well enough to feel hatred towards him.
The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to first feature the star of Splash, but the producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding the core motivations of their characters. She said it’s difficult to balance multiple external expectations when trying to portray real people accurately, so they generally avoid extensive outside input unless absolutely necessary.
Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story needs, according to Jacobson, but the writers still make sure to highlight her understanding of the celebrity world – something Carolyn lacks.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, forcing him to confront what he truly desires.
Daryl promised to come back for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, someone asked him for an autograph, causing him to lose hold of the leash. Tragically, Hank was struck and killed by a taxi. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.
According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, shared that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic in Central Park and was hit by a car in May 1994.
According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly declined. He felt angry that Daryl had made him attend a dog’s funeral when his own mother was seriously ill with cancer.
In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, and then collapses at home. This scene was created for dramatic impact, but it’s also meant to emphasize how seriously ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.
I’ve always been fascinated by their story. They really connected right away and had a wonderful summer romance, but things faded a bit for almost two years, as Beller wrote.
