Becoming a father profoundly impacted the NASCAR champion—who secured more than a dozen victories from 2003 to 2016—and positively influenced the entire racing community.

He explained to USA Today in 2014 that seeing friends and family members have children shifted his perspective. While they’d always considered having kids someday, it wasn’t a firm plan. But when friends announced their pregnancies, it made him rethink things and realize he was ready to start a family.

Greg, 55, chuckled, recalling a recent dinner with Jamie McMurray and Matt Kenseth at Watkins Glen. He said they all ended up bringing car seats for their young children.

Greg, Cristina, Ryder, and Emma tragically died in a plane crash on December 18th, along with three other passengers, as confirmed by Congressman Richard Hudson.

He shared on X that they were friends dedicated to helping people. Greg was a beloved NASCAR champion who excited millions with his racing, but he was also an incredible person. He’ll be remembered just as much for his kindness and service to others as for his bravery as a driver.
