Bringing a grotesque monster to life onscreen is no easy feat—just ask Jacob Elordi.
The actor completely changed his appearance to play the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s dark and dramatic film, Frankenstein. This dedication—including daily hours of makeup and 42 prosthetic pieces—resulted in a 2026 Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Jacob explained to Netflix’s Tudum that transforming into a character involves a noticeable change in appearance. He described how makeup alters your complexion and features, and how the addition of a costume – especially with heavy materials like leather and fur – adds physical weight and truly completes the transformation.
The 28-year-old actor explained that preparing for this challenging role started well before filming actually began.
He described how the performance truly started the instant he sat down in the makeup chair, feeling incredibly vibrant. According to Guillermo, it wouldn’t just be a thoughtful experience, but a complete transformation.
The Academy Award-winning director was thrilled with Jacob’s performance, telling Francesca Amiker of TopMob News in October that he handled everything “with grace, patience, and love.”

Guillermo explained that he compared the process to a priest preparing for a ceremony, with many layers of robes and guards. He emphasized that the actor needed to embody the essence of the character, viewing the supporting elements as their ceremonial guard and truly becoming the ‘Creature.’ He described the performance that followed as deeply moving and raw, filled with a vulnerable innocence that was both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Jacob’s performance was highly praised by his director and even won him a Critics Choice Award, but the experience also left him feeling more motivated and focused on his work.
I was so moved by what he shared with Tudum! He said this experience will stay with him forever, and honestly, it really resonated with me. He explained that it totally rekindled his love for filmmaking, and now he’s approaching his work with a completely fresh and exciting energy. It’s inspiring to see that kind of passion!
