For six days in April of 1994, Kurt Cobain was missing.
Kurt Cobain, the famous singer for the band Nirvana, had disappeared. Police searched for him, Courtney Love hired a private investigator, and his friends were worried and actively looking for any information about his whereabouts.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by the details surrounding pivotal moments. One such moment occurred on April 8th, 1994, when electrician Gary Smith went to Kurt Cobain’s Seattle home to install a security system. Sadly, when he checked the greenhouse above the garage, he made a truly heartbreaking discovery – Kurt’s body, a shotgun nearby, and a note. It’s a tragic story, and those details remain incredibly impactful.
The King County Medical Examiner determined Kurt Cobain’s death was a suicide. However, questions about the circumstances have fueled numerous conspiracy theories over the years. Many fans, and now a recent report from a team of forensic scientists, believe he was actually murdered.
The medical examiner found a large amount of heroin and some Valium in Kurt Cobain’s system, and estimated he had been dead for approximately two days, despite extensive efforts to locate him.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen patterns emerge, and this situation felt tragically predictable. It was a heartbreaking end, one that, looking back, seemed avoidable, but it stemmed from a life that had been spiraling downwards for a while. It felt almost inevitable, sadly.
When Nirvana’s album Nevermind became a huge success in 1991 – selling over 10 million copies worldwide and making lead singer Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl famous – Cobain was already struggling with serious personal issues. This album was Nirvana’s second, but their first to be released on a major record label.
Kurt Cobain’s parents divorced when he was eight years old in 1975, which deeply affected him and led to a rebellious attitude. This rebellion fueled the unique and unconventional style of his music. However, the ways he tried to cope with his emotional pain weren’t always healthy.

He started smoking marijuana around age 13, and by 19, he first tried heroin. By the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, he was severely addicted.
I remember when he connected with Love – she definitely had her own struggles, that was clear. It was interesting to see, after all the news about his passing, that she posted a picture on Instagram on February 9th of her reading a book from Flamingo Estate, The Guide to Becoming Alive. It felt like a little message, a quiet acknowledgment of everything.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were a famously turbulent couple, often compared to Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, though their story ended differently. They married in 1992 and welcomed their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, six months later.
In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Frances Bean said she always recognized her parents’ relationship as unhealthy, pointing to their shared drug use as a starting point. She explained she felt like a ‘fix-it baby’ – brought into the world to try and resolve their issues. She added that both her parents came from unstable families and quickly wanted to build their own, hoping it would be different. They believed starting a family would help them escape the patterns of their upbringing.
Looking back, it was far more chaotic than expected,” said the 33-year-old, who and her husband, Riley Hawk, welcomed their son, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, in 2024.
Kurt Cobain’s personal struggles first came to light in August 1992. A Vanity Fair article reported that Courtney Love had used heroin during her pregnancy with Frances. While Love disputed the story, it led to both parents being temporarily denied access to their baby for a month.
In a 1992 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kurt Cobain said he had experimented with heroin but had successfully gone through detox twice in the previous year. Following this, he and his partner regained custody of their child.
In 1993, Cobain experienced several drug overdoses and was arrested after a fight with Courtney Love involving firearms. Police took possession of three guns, which Cobain later retrieved months afterward.
Nirvana released their third and last album, In Utero, in September. Although it had a rawer, less commercial sound that reflected Kurt Cobain’s troubled emotions, it still reached the top of the charts at number one.
Following a North American tour, the band headed to Europe the following February.
Kurt Cobain’s European tour hit a snag in Germany when he lost his voice, forcing him to cut the visit short. He then traveled to Rome on March 3rd to see a doctor and stayed at the Excelsior Hotel. Courtney Love and their baby joined him there the following day.
Oh god, it was awful. I’ve read everything, everything about that night. Apparently, Kurt and Courtney were mixing champagne with Rohypnol – can you even imagine? – and the next morning, she found him… completely out of it. She said she reached for him and there was blood coming from his nose. She’d seen him messed up before, of course, but she told Select magazine that she’d never seen him that close to… to just disappearing. It breaks my heart every time I read it. Just… awful.
He was immediately taken to the hospital and stayed in a coma for 20 hours. Doctors discovered 50 Rohypnol pills in his stomach, each of which had been individually wrapped before being swallowed.

According to Love, this was the first time Cobain had attempted suicide. She told Rolling Stone that he was at the foot of their bed with a thousand dollars and a note claiming she no longer loved him and that he’d rather die than get divorced. She believed it was a result of his internal struggles. While she thought he may not have remembered exactly how many pills he took, she was certain he had a strong desire to end his life, evidenced by his compulsive behavior.
After three days in the hospital, Cobain was released and allowed to return home to Seattle.
On March 25th, ten people, including Kurt Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love, Krist Novoselic, and a close friend named Dylan Carlson, met at Cobain’s house with a counselor to try and get him help. Love told Cobain she would leave him if he didn’t get treatment, and Novoselic warned that the band might break up if he didn’t.
Cobain’s wife had wanted him to go to rehab in Los Angeles with her, but she ended up traveling there by herself.

The next day, she checked into the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills and started an outpatient program to overcome her reliance on tranquilizers, her representative said. She later admitted she regretted leaving Cobain by himself, stating in a recorded message played at his memorial service a couple of weeks later, “That ’80s tough-love approach—it just doesn’t work.”
According to Tucker Carlson’s account to Rolling Stone, Kurt Cobain visited his home on March 30th, asking for help getting a gun because people were illegally entering his property.
Carlson said Cobain seemed like his usual self when they spoke. He also mentioned he’d let Cobain borrow guns in the past. According to Carlson, Cobain wanted his help buying a new gun because the police had recently taken others from him. They went to a gun store and purchased a Remington 20-gauge shotgun and ammunition for around $300, which Cobain gave Carlson the cash to pay for.
You know, when my friend Kurt told me he was heading to L.A., I was a little surprised to hear he’d just bought a shotgun. It just felt off, honestly. I offered to keep it safe for him while he was gone, thinking it might be a good idea, but he politely declined. He was pretty set on keeping it with him.
The police theory is that Cobain dropped the firearm at his house, then left Seattle.
He briefly entered the Exodus Recovery Center in Marina Del Rey, California, but only stayed for two days.
On April 1st, he called his wife, who was still at the Peninsula hotel. She later recounted to a Seattle newspaper that he told her, “Courtney, no matter what happens, I want you to know you made a wonderful life.” When she asked what he meant, he simply said, “Just remember, no matter what, I love you.” Those were his last words to her.

Around 7:25 p.m., the patient told staff he was going outside to smoke. Staff stated they were unaware of his history with depression or previous suicide attempts. He then climbed over the facility’s six-foot brick wall and left. A spokesperson said at the time that while they closely monitor patients, some are still able to leave.
Kurt Cobain flew back to Seattle on the same flight as Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan. McKagan later recalled that he sensed something was off with Cobain during the trip.
When Love discovered that his patient had left treatment, he immediately canceled all of his credit cards and hired private investigator Tom Grant to find him. However, the patient was already on his way to Washington.
People spotted Cobain in Seattle on April 2nd and 3rd, but no one could find him. On April 4th, his mother, Wendy O’Connor, reported him missing to the police, expressing her concern that he might be considering suicide.
According to the police investigation, on April 5th, Cobain spent the day seemingly wandering around town, perhaps with a quick stop at a gun shop for ammunition. He then went back to his home, locked himself in the greenhouse above the garage, and died by suicide. Before doing so, he wrote a short note in red ink and left his wallet open, potentially so his body could be identified.
After Kurt Cobain was reported missing, police went to Courtney Love’s hotel room on April 7th following a 911 call about a potential drug overdose. She was briefly hospitalized, then arrested and charged with possessing drugs, drug accessories, a syringe, and stolen items.
Okay, so after a brief stay in jail, she was released on bail. Honestly, it was a really tough time, and she immediately went to a recovery center called Exodus. But then, she got the devastating news about Kurt – they found him. She checked out of Exodus the very next day, understandably needing to process everything and deal with the situation.

Seattle radio station KXRX-FM first announced Kurt Cobain’s death. A colleague of his housekeeper called in with the news, jokingly claiming they deserved a lifetime of concert tickets for breaking the story.
“Broadcasting this information was kind of an eerie decision to make,” Marty Reimer, the on-air personality who took the call, told Rolling Stone. “We’re not a news station.”

The Seattle Police Department receives roughly one request each week – often via Twitter – asking them to revisit a particular case. Because of this consistent public interest, the department’s public affairs unit maintains a simple record of each incident.
And, yet, in some ways Cobain’s loved ones were always readying themselves for his death.
Dave Grohl once said in a 2009 interview with BBC Radio 1 that you sometimes meet people who seem destined not to live a long life, and you subconsciously prepare yourself for that possibility.
