Insomniac Games has become well-known for its excellent superhero games, and fans are eagerly awaiting titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. However, a recent leak revealed some of the studio’s future plans, and it appears things have changed. This could mean a planned Marvel game has been cancelled, focusing instead on a single character previously hinted at in their other games.
In 2023, Insomniac Games released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation 5, building on the popularity of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales. While some players had criticisms of the sequel, many are optimistic that the developers will address these concerns as they work on a darker, more mature game featuring Marvel’s Wolverine. Although Insomniac has confirmed they’re actively working on both games, only a single trailer has been released so far, offering a glimpse into their current projects.
Marvel’s Venom Has Been Rumored Ever Since The Release Of Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2

One game Insomniac hasn’t officially announced is a Marvel’s Venom spin-off, which has been the subject of rumors for a long time. Fans believe it’s possible, pointing to Marvel’s Miles Morales as a precedent – a shorter, standalone adventure within the Spider-Man universe. Some Venom fans are hoping this game would introduce Eddie Brock as the symbiote’s host, giving the iconic character a starring role after the symbiote was separated from Harry Osborn in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
For the past three years, several theories about the game have proven to be accurate, even supported by details within Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 itself. Notably, the game lets players control Venom, offering a unique gameplay experience with entirely different abilities than Peter Parker or Miles Morales. Players were excited to discover Venom’s aggressive combat style, which reminded them of playing the character in classic Spider-Man games like the 2005 title Ultimate Spider-Man on GameCube and PlayStation 2.
Several elements in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hinted at a future game starring Venom. Specifically, side missions involving a cult of arsonists revealed that Cletus Kasady—the villain famously linked to Venom’s enemy, Carnage—had obtained some of the symbiote. Everything suggested Insomniac Games was planning a Venom game, though they haven’t officially announced it yet.
Venom’s Spin-Off Was Derailed By Many Elements Outside Of Developer Control

About two years ago, Insomniac Games suffered a major data breach. Hackers released a lot of confidential information about their upcoming projects, including early gameplay footage of Marvel’s Wolverine. Some fans were upset to see this unfinished, pre-alpha footage. The leak also revealed plans for a potential Venom spin-off game. These hacks likely forced Insomniac to change their development plans and may have caused significant problems.
Recent leaks may have disrupted Insomniac’s plans for Venom or any downloadable content for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, causing potential delays. Sadly, Tony Todd, the voice actor for Venom, passed away in 2024 after a battle with cancer. Because a Marvel’s Venom game would likely focus on the character’s internal struggles and voice acting, his passing could contribute to further production delays for the spin-off.
Cancelled Spider-Man 2 DLC & Lack Of News Bodes Poorly For Venom Fans

Insomniac Games has stated they don’t plan to add any more story-based downloadable content (DLC) to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, unlike the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game. This decision comes despite many fans asking for more story, as the narrative was considered a weaker part of Spider-Man 2. It was unexpected because the DLC for the original Marvel’s Spider-Man cleverly foreshadowed events in the sequel.
The lack of downloadable content and any news about a Venom game is a worrying sign. It suggests the project might be cancelled so Insomniac Games can focus on Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and Marvel’s Wolverine. While Insomniac is currently prioritizing Wolverine, they previously worked on the Miles Morales spin-off alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Regardless, enthusiasm for a Venom game fades with each passing year, making it increasingly difficult to justify the game’s development.
Venom continues to be a fan-favorite Marvel character, though some dedicated fans weren’t completely satisfied with how he was portrayed in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. There’s still a chance Insomniac Games is planning to release a Venom game after Marvel’s Wolverine, which would then lead into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. If Insomniac is aiming for a larger, more ambitious Venom game, these delays would be understandable. However, the current lack of news or downloadable content is leaving fans worried about what’s next.
