Intense New World War 2 Movie Hits #1 on Prime Video (But It’s Dividing Viewers)

A new movie called The Tank (originally titled Der Tiger) is quickly becoming popular on Prime Video, but it’s also receiving mixed reactions from viewers. The 2025 German film is directed by Dennis Gansel, who previously collaborated with writer Colin Teevan on the Das Boot TV series reboot.

The new Prime Video hit, The Tank, follows a German Tiger tank crew on a dangerous secret mission deep behind enemy lines. Driven by methamphetamine supplied by the German army, their assignment quickly spirals into a harrowing ordeal. Currently, it’s the most popular movie on the platform, beating out the action film Trap House starring Dave Bautista.

The story might seem unbelievable, but it’s surprisingly true. Nazi Germany actually made an exception to its strict drug laws for methamphetamine. According to Time magazine, when the drug appeared in the late 1930s, it was promoted as a wonder product. It was ideal for the Nazi regime because it boosted energy and confidence, fitting their focus on physical and mental strength. Unlike drugs like heroin or alcohol, which offered escape, methamphetamine was used to increase alertness and focus.

Gansel’s film is likely one of the earliest WWII movies to examine the impact of drug use on German soldiers, both physically and mentally. However, this approach is proving surprising for some viewers. While many are comparing The Tank to David Ayer’s 2014 film Fury, it’s not the typical war movie it appears to be at first.

The Tank Is Splitting Viewers Down the Cinephile Line

Be warned, major spoilers ahead! The film The Tank is most similar to Jacob’s Ladder. It’s revealed that the tank crew, led by Philip Gerkens, actually died when a bridge they were crossing was blown up by retreating German forces. Everything we see after that is a surreal and nightmarish experience, showing the soldiers’ souls eternally trapped in a repeating cycle of war and death.

Film fans might be surprised by this turn of events, but most viewers probably won’t find it shocking. One Reddit user, Srgblackbear, shared that they were hoping for a fast-paced WWII tank movie, but felt the filmmakers prioritized the Tiger I replica, sound effects, and CGI over the actual battle sequence, which ultimately felt like a letdown.

Many viewers appreciated the film’s unique, artistic take on a World War II story. One commenter, Odd_Try5499, explained that the movie isn’t a typical war film like ‘Fury.’ Instead, it’s more similar to thought-provoking works like ‘Apocalypse Now’ and the game ‘Spec Ops: The Line.’ The film’s subtitle, which translates to ‘We reap what we sow,’ hints at its true nature: a psychological thriller. The story ultimately reveals that the events of the movie are a result of the main character facing the consequences of his past actions, and his reaction to those consequences drives the plot.
