After taking a break from his role as co-showrunner for HBO’s “The Last of Us” TV series to work on “Intergalactic”, Neil Druckmann provided some recent insights into its progress. Although there’s no confirmed release date or gameplay demonstration, he shared with Variety that the team is deeply engrossed in the project and it’s shaping up to be their most ambitious, expansive, and ultimately, costliest game to date.
We’re not just creating it, but also fine-tuning it. We’re giving our all in every aspect. Let me emphasize this once again – I truly mean it when I say this: This game is the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken. It boasts an unprecedented scale, and based on current progress, it could also be one of our costliest productions.
I can’t contain my excitement to reveal more! The trailer we released merely hints at what our game truly offers, so I’m eagerly looking forward to the moment when players get to experience it in full,” says Druckmann (as a fan).
Given the nature of unveiling such an innovative game, particularly since it’s a new Intellectual Property from Naughty Dog, coordination with marketing, PR, and numerous others is crucial. Therefore, it would be imprudent for me to commit to revealing anything at this moment.
He didn’t quite manage to explain why Intergalactic is thought to have the “deepest gameplay” in Naughty Dog’s history, but there might be a hint in the development process from Uncharted to The Last of Us. By examining their past games, you can trace the transformation from Uncharted, where they were just starting to refine a realistic character-action game, third-person shooter, and emotional storytelling.
In ‘The Last of Us,’ we introduced some role-playing game (RPG) elements and experimented with a wide, linear design. If we continue down that path, introduce sci-fi elements, you’ll start to understand the direction we’re heading. However, our ambitions go beyond that. We’re really excited to see how it all unfolds, and I believe everyone will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.
In simpler terms, the game titled “Intergalactic” appears to draw inspiration from the player freedom found in Elden Ring, hinting at an open world setting. The narrative revolves around a bounty hunter named Jordan A. Mun who, while pursuing a target on Sempiria, ends up getting stranded on the planet. Jordan’s combat style appears to primarily involve close-quarters fighting, but other details about the game remain scant.
Sadly, we won’t get to play the game ‘Intergalactic’ any time soon, as Sony has indicated its release will happen after March 2026, and according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it won’t be coming out next year either. Keep an eye on this space for further announcements.
