Interview with the Vampire has returned for a new season, now called The Vampire Lestat, with a completely fresh look and feel.
Sam Reid plays Lestat de Lioncourt, who embraces a full-blown rockstar lifestyle and hits the road on tour. As his fame and influence grow, he’s also forced to confront memories of people from his past.
I have to admit, I was surprised to see Lestat now telling the story instead of Louis. It’s a big change, and a lot of us fans are still trying to wrap our heads around it – it’s definitely caused some debate!
Executive producer Hannah Moscovitch clarified the change by pointing out that Lestat and Louis experience things differently. Unlike Louis, Lestat has a consistent memory of his life, which affects how their perspectives are presented in the show.
Lestat avoids confronting his past by simply moving forward and ignoring his memories. However, when he begins creating art, those 265 years of experiences resurface, and the process is actually destructive for him.
As a film fan, what really struck me about this character arc is how it’s forcing him to confront himself, to actually see who he is. It’s like he’s developing a personal understanding of things, which is a total contrast to the other guy, Louis. Louis actively avoids self-reflection, either refusing to look at his own flaws or just straight-up remembering things differently to suit his narrative.

Viewers have responded in different ways to the change in who narrates the show. Some find it irritating and feel it doesn’t fit, while others believe it successfully captures the feel of the original book.
I was really intrigued by the first episode of The Vampire Lestat, especially when they introduced Lestat’s mother, Gabriella, played by Jennifer Ehle. Their relationship is… complicated, to say the least! It’s not just a mother-son thing; there’s this strange, almost romantic tension between them that’s definitely unsettling and fascinating.
While Lestat is the main character this season, Louis, played by Anderson, makes a return, along with familiar faces Eric Bogosian, Delainey Hayles, and Assad Zaman.
People in the US are already watching the first episode of the new season, but viewers in the UK will have to wait before they can see it.
You can now watch seasons one and two of Interview with the Vampire on BBC iPlayer. Fans can also expect to see The Vampire Lestat streaming on BBC iPlayer later in 2024.
As a total film buff, I have to recommend you add Interview with the Vampire to your watchlist on the TopMob: What to Watch app. Seriously, download it now – they give you awesome daily TV and movie recommendations, plus cool features and articles. You won’t regret it!
