The fourth season of Invincible recently concluded with an incredibly brutal fight between Mark and Conquest. While their battle caused massive destruction, one major moment from the finale is getting a lot of attention: the return of Tech Jacket. The character, created by Robert Kirkman in Image Comics, has been reimagined. Instead of being known as “Zack Thompson,” Tech Jacket is now “Zoey Thompson,” a gender-swapped version of the hero. Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, recently explained the reasoning behind this change.
Robert Kirkman recently told Den of Geek that the character Tech Jacket needed a change to avoid being too similar to Invincible’s main character, Mark Grayson. They decided to reimagine Tech Jacket as a female character, Zoey, instead of the originally planned Zach. Kirkman believes this gender swap adds interesting new dimensions to the story. As the Viltrumite War continues in Invincible season four, Zoey is expected to be a key player.
A New Tech Jacket Arrives

Kirkman shared that adding actress Zoey Deutch will bring a fresh energy to the hero. He described her as bringing a lot of vibrancy and fun to the role. Showrunner Simon Racioppa also praised Deutch, noting she quickly understood the character and is a joy to work with, bringing both professionalism and humor to the part. He highlighted that the character is inherently funny, and Deutch perfectly delivers the witty dialogue and one-liners. Both creators expressed their excitement about casting her.
The latest episode of Invincible brings us past the halfway point of season four, and the war with the Viltrumites is really escalating. Zoey and Allen the Alien are currently in hiding, trying to avoid being killed. Meanwhile, Mark Grayson is in a tough spot, and the Coalition of Planets needs time to recover before they can even think about defeating Thragg. Good news for fans: Amazon Prime Video has already renewed the show for a fifth season! The creators are hoping to tell Mark Grayson’s complete story over several more seasons, meaning we can expect plenty more Invincible content in the years to come.
