Invincible Creator Has Bad News for More Specials (& Why They Won’t Happen)

Fans of the animated series Invincible were hoping for more standalone specials focusing on characters like Rex Splode, but according to one of the show’s creators, those aren’t likely to happen in the near future. Invincible is currently releasing the second half of its fourth season on Prime Video, with work already underway on Season 5. Maintaining this yearly release schedule for the main series, however, requires the team to prioritize and put other projects on hold.

Robert Kirkman, co-creator of Invincible, recently told Collider that another special like 2023’s Invincible Presents: Atom Eve is unlikely. Although there’s interest in creating more specials, the team is currently fully focused on producing the main Invincible series annually and doesn’t have the time or opportunity to work on them.

Invincible’s Robert Kirkman Explains Why There Are No New Specials

Kirkman said they weren’t planning a special similar to Rex Splode’s. He explained the Atom Eve special was created because of the long gap between the first and second seasons – a gap everyone, including himself, disliked. They made the Atom Eve special to have something new available while they finished up the rest of Season 2 and reduce the wait for fans.

Kirkman explained that because of the fast pace of creating the Invincible animated series, the team hasn’t had time to work on any extra episodes or specials. They know fans want more content and are interested in making it happen, but they haven’t found an opportunity to fit it into their schedule yet. They’re hoping they’ll be able to in the future.

What Does This Mean for Invincible’s Future?

According to Robert Kirkman, the creator, Season 5 of Invincible is currently planned for release in Spring 2027. The team is focused on keeping up with a yearly release schedule, which is good for the show’s momentum – avoiding the long delays fans experienced between episodes of Season 2. However, this tight schedule leaves little room for creating additional standalone specials.

While there are side stories and tales featuring characters like Rex Splode, don’t expect to see those adapted into animation. Plus, considering the fan response to the recent storyline in Invincible, future seasons will likely focus on advancing the main plot and won’t spend time on filler. This is a deliberate choice to keep the story moving forward.
