Invincible VS Is the Superhero Fighting Game Fusion I Never Knew I Wanted So Badly

Fighting games have largely stuck to the same core design principles for many years. While new games continue to improve on those early foundations – like those established by Street Fighter – they often do so by adding unique characters and features. A common approach is to feature a cast of superheroes, which works well because superhero stories translate naturally into video game formats.

The newest game is Invincible VS, a gritty take on the popular Skybound comic series. It features a vibrant and violent visual style, much like the Invincible animated show on Prime Video and the original comics. This, combined with unique superhero fighting game mechanics, makes for a really captivating experience. Comicbook.com recently had a chance to play Invincible VS at a preview event in Los Angeles following the 2026 Evo Awards, and we were very impressed.

Invincible VS Is The Brutal Fusion Of Injustice And Marvel Vs. Capcom

A cool thing about Invincible VS is how it borrows ideas from other superhero adaptations, just like the animated series does with Marvel and DC comics. The game feels familiar to those who’ve played fighting games with powerful heroes, but it also captures the raw, intense energy that Invincible is known for. Superhero characters work really well in fighting games because each one has a unique style and spectacular moves, making the roster feel fresh and different. Ultimately, Invincible VS blends classic fighting game elements with the franchise’s signature gritty take on the superhero world.

The game’s violence goes beyond simple damage, featuring incredibly impactful hits that can result in decapitations or characters being reduced to gore. It feels similar to Injustice: Gods Among Us if it had embraced the extreme brutality of Mortal Kombat, particularly with its powerful attacks and dynamic stage interactions. However, Invincible VS doesn’t just slow things down like Mortal Kombat; it also incorporates the fast-paced, chaotic energy of the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

Okay, so one of the coolest things about this game is the tag-team system. You can switch between three characters during a fight, and it really opens up your options. Combine that with the fact that you can launch opponents into the air and keep them juggling, and battles feel way faster than in most fighting games. Each character also feels totally different to play – they’ve really nailed the movement and how powerful they feel. It just adds a ton of depth and makes team battles really creative, which is awesome considering how many fighters there are to choose from!

Invincible VS Has Enough Crunch For Fans And Enough Power For Gamers

The preview event for Invincible VS really showed off the exciting work Skybound Entertainment is doing. The one-on-one fighting feels great, and the characters are designed with a lot of depth, making you want to experiment with different move combinations. I had just as much fun controlling the elements as Ella Mental as I did using Monster Girl’s powerful, close-range attacks. The hits feel impactful, which keeps the fast-paced action from feeling weightless, even during intense aerial battles. Combining heavy-hitting attacks with quick ranged options creates a varied and engaging combat system that prevents things from getting stale.

If you enjoy fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom and Injustice, Invincible VS offers a fresh take on the formula. It’s fast-paced and the tag-team system encourages you to experiment with different characters and playstyles. While it builds on ideas from older fighting games, Invincible VS stands out with its over-the-top action and particularly violent edge, something you don’t often see in this genre. It doesn’t revolutionize fighting games, but it improves on the existing formula enough to be a worthwhile addition, especially as the Invincible universe expands through its animated series. The game successfully combines classic fighting gameplay with a uniquely brutal and colorful aesthetic.

Invincible VS will be released on April 30, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/ S.
