Imagine if, instead of bonding with Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote took control of a much more powerful person – someone who could shape the future of the world and even the entire multiverse. That’s the idea explored in a new comic, which surprisingly combines Venom with Iron Man.
The newest issue of the What If…? comic series – which gained popularity with the Disney+ animated show – will reveal Tony Stark’s most troubling inner thoughts. It promises to be a dramatic story for this iconic, long-time Avenger, second only to Captain America in terms of longevity.
To mark its 50th anniversary, the next season of What If…? is promising some truly shocking stories. The recent reveal of Venom’s symbiote taking over Iron Man is a major highlight, but Marvel has plenty more surprises in store.
Iron Man Isn’t the Only Wild ‘What If …?’
Get ready for a completely new take on Thor, and prepare for a summer full of exciting What If…? shorts from Marvel! The first four will be released as detailed below.
- June 3: What If…? The Uncanny X-Men #1
- June 17: What If…? The Mighty Thor #1 (Thor gets the symbiote suit)
- July 1: What If…? Secret Wars #1 (The Ultimate Universe survives)
- July 15: What If…? Jessica Jones #1 (The spider bites Jessica Jones)
Marvel is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new series of What If…? one-shot comics! These stories will explore alternate versions of classic Marvel tales, starting in June with What If…? Uncanny X-Men #1, which imagines what would have happened if Cyclops had remained with Madelyne Pryor. Also launching is What If…? Thor #1, asking the question: what if Thor had worn Spider-Man’s symbiote suit?
What If Marvel Assembled An Avengers-type Cast of Creators?
The project is especially thrilling because of the incredible team working on it. In addition to Gerry Duggan and Jan Bazaldua joining Torunn Grønbekk and Sergio Dávila, many other talented creators are on board to elevate the What If…? series in 2026.
Marvel’s current group of Stormbreakers artists includes Alessandro Cappuccio (working on Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men).
These artists were selected because of their incredible work, impressive accomplishments, and limitless creativity in illustrating the Marvel universe. They’re the next generation of comic book artists and have the potential to redefine visual storytelling.
What If … ? debuts on June 3, 2026, with and runs through August 2026.
