The latest Disney+ series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, titled “Ironheart,” showcases Riri Williams’s solo debut, offering an opportunity for her to create something remarkable in tribute to Tony Stark’s legacy. Consisting of six episodes, this miniseries unfolds shortly after the occurrences depicted in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Upon her return home, Riri endeavors to refine her Ironheart suit, but soon finds herself associating with questionable individuals. This predicament compels her to decide on the kind of super-powered personality she wishes to embody and the extent of risk she is prepared to take to realize her ambition.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I find myself deeply drawn to a character who sees Tony Stark as her guiding star, with a wealth of ties to the groundbreaking film that sparked the global sensation – “Iron Man” from 2008. In its thrilling three-episode debut, “Ironheart” unravels a seventeen-year-old enigma surrounding a crucial character who’s been absent since “Iron Man,” and subtly suggests a monumental deception perpetrated by an icon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This deception could potentially explain the catastrophic disintegration of the Avengers during Phase 3. What was this secret, and how is it still shaping the MCU today?
Ironheart Reveals a Major S.H.I.E.L.D. Cover-Up
The Public Believes a Lie About a Major MCU Villain
During the initial three episodes of “Ironheart”, viewers meet Joe McGillicuddy, a laid-back tech guy from the neighborhood who gets unwittingly pulled into Riri Williams’ thrilling escapades. However, it doesn’t take long before Riri uncovers the hidden truth; “Joe McGillilludy” is actually the alias of the primary antagonist from the first Iron Man film.
In order to strengthen her argument, Riri unearths a small plastic bag filled with the remains of the once formidable Iron Monger, otherwise known as Obadiah. What’s more unsettling than the twenty-year-old ashes of Zeke’s dad is the fact that most people in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are unaware of Obadiah’s evil deeds. In essence, Ironheart reveals that the general public believes that Obadiah Stane perished in a plane crash back in 2008, oblivious to the truth that he was actually killed during a fight with Tony Stark after assuming the wicked persona of Iron Monger.
In the current times, it’s believed that S.H.I.E.L.D. and its leader, Nick Fury, might have concealed the death of Obadiah Stane. Back then, superheroes and villains were scarce, so the confrontation between Iron Man and Iron Monger was more exceptional than commonplace as we know it now. To prevent widespread panic, S.H.I.E.L.D. fabricated a tale about Obadiah Stane dying in a plane crash to mask the reality of his demise.
By concealing the truth about Iron Monger’s misuse of technology, S.H.I.E.L.D., who was trying to gather enhanced individuals for a superhero team at that point in the MCU timeline, likely prevented the public from questioning Iron Man’s intentions and becoming skeptical towards him. If the public had known about how quickly his tech was turned evil, they might not have welcomed Ironheart as readily.
Given their direct involvement in the event, S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn’t hesitate to intervene and manage the storyline, much like they attempted to by presenting Iron Man as Tony Stark’s bodyguard. This brings up a more significant query that might concern longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts: What other instances have S.H.I.E.L.D. concealed or manipulated?
What Else Has S.H.I.E.L.D. Lied About?
S.H.I.E.L.D. Had an Abnormal Sway Over Heroes’ Stories
In a time before the frequent appearances of superheroes and villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this individual might have been actively involved in concealing significant incidents, hoping to maintain the public’s ignorance about such events.
During Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, S.H.I.E.L.D. often tried to manipulate public perception by creating false narratives about the unusual occurrences happening worldwide. Much like they deceived people about Obadiah Stane’s death, there’s a possibility that S.H.I.E.L.D. might have hidden the true actions of various other MCU villains as well.
It’s plausible to think that the general public might not be fully informed about the details of these events, or perhaps they only know the basic outline of what happened, such as the Hulk fighting the Abomination in Harlem during the incidents depicted in The Incredible Hulk. However, a more comprehensive understanding of this conflict, involving Emil Blonsky and Thaddeus Ross’s military scandal, might not be widely known among the public.
In Captain America: Brave New World, it is established that Samuel Sterns was unfairly blamed by the government for the disaster. It’s also possible that events portrayed in other Marvel Cinatic Universe films, such as Tony Stark’s fight with Whiplash in Iron Man 2 and Thor’s encounter with the Destroyer in his first movie, may have been influenced or altered by S.H.I.E.L.D.
In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the official narrative often clashed with eyewitness accounts of conflicts involving its heroes and villains. This discrepancy allowed much of the public to be misled about these characters’ actions. Yet, these deceptions might have ultimately led to the disintegration of the Avengers team during the events depicted in “Captain America: Civil War.
S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Mistake May Have Destroyed the Avengers
The Public May Have Had a Better Opinion of the Avengers If They Had All the Information
The Avengers are splitting up due in part to increased public scrutiny following a tragic incident in Lagos. Citizens and governments of the MCU start questioning the Avengers’ effectiveness in keeping them safe. This doubt sparks demands for tighter control over the team, causing a divide between Captain America and Iron Man. Their disagreement on the issue eventually leads to the Superhero Civil War.
In a different scenario, the disaster might not have occurred if people had known the complete truth about the Avengers’ activities. It appears that S.H.I.E.L.D., in many instances, altered the narratives surrounding each Avenger’s actions, often omitting references to villains such as Iron Monger and the Abomination. This manipulation of stories may have temporarily placated the public, but it also means that most citizens are unaware of the significant efforts the Avengers make in safeguarding them.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), common folks often believe that the Avengers are primarily needed for catastrophic events like those caused by Loki and Ultron. However, they remain oblivious to the fact that these superheroes have saved their lives from smaller-scale villains such as Iron Monger and Whiplash on a regular basis. Consequently, if they were aware of these lesser-known actions, they might place greater importance on preserving the heroes’ rights.
Given that they understand how frequently heroes intervene to protect their lives, as shown in Civil War, they might not have been so hasty to criticize the team’s actions. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. concealed the activities of supervillains worldwide, which also meant hiding the Avengers’ heroic deeds. This misinformation turned public opinion against them, and ten years later, they faced criticism and distrust.
From the outset of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. committed a significant blunder that had severe consequences. Even following S.H.I.E.L.D.’s disbandment, the Avengers have found it challenging to restore their tarnished reputation and rebuild the world’s faith in them.
