Is it possible that Don Warrington, the longest-standing cast member on Death in Paradise, might soon leave the BBC murder mystery series?
In the premiere of season 14, I learned from returning figure JP Hooper that the higher-ups at the police headquarters in Jamaica were contemplating to eliminate my role, as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
“I’m really, really sorry, sir,” he says to Selwyn, who is initially rendered speechless.
“Thank you for letting me know,” he responds after taking a beat. “I really appreciate it.”
The implication is that he encounters an unforeseen circumstance which will bring about a significant shift in his life and standing. This event is momentous.
“He has to work through a crisis, really, and he resolves it in one way or another.”
In an interview with TopMob magazine, Warrington expressed similar sentiments: “It’s incredibly troubling. He’s experiencing a complete overturn of his life, but he must face the situation, as it’s out of his hands.
“It affects everybody equally,” she added.
Now, this isn’t the first time Selwyn’s fate has hung in the balance.
In the 100th episode of the series, the head of the Honoré Police force narrowly escaped death after being shot at a gathering, and there were indications that he might consider retiring following this incident.
After the shooting incident, Selwyn found himself questioning the meaning of life, as well as examining his personal relationships and bond with his daughter, as Holder pointed out.
Such events touch several sensitive points in him, much like how similar occurrences can affect anyone. It’s essential to pause and reflect. What is life truly about? Are the burdens we carry necessary? By examining our circumstances, Selwyn must find a way to see things clearly.
In due course, he opted to remain where he was, and life swiftly resumed its familiar rhythm – or as close to routine as one could expect on a murder-plagued island.
But will that be the case this time?
According to the official summary, it is clear that Mayor Catherine Bordey serves as the final safeguard in an effort to protect the team from potential danger.
Will she save Selwyn from being forced out the door?
During a chat with TopMob magazine, Warrington mentioned he wasn’t able to talk about whether or not he was excited for filming season 15 since doing so might reveal information about his upcoming plans.
“Who knows? Anything can happen in this life,” he added.
