Ebaster’s “Binge or Skip” helps you figure out which new shows are worth watching. This week, we’re looking at Dexter: Resurrection, the popular thriller available on Paramount+ that has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But is this season the best Dexter has to offer?
The TV show Dexter first aired on Showtime in 2006, and it’s recently seen a resurgence in popularity. Dexter: Resurrection was a big hit, and the new prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, generated a lot of buzz—though it was unfortunately cancelled, upsetting many fans. Luckily, the success of Dexter: Resurrection means we’ll get a second season in 2026. With all this happening, the big question is: does the new Dexter series live up to the hype?
Why You Should Press Play On Dexter: Resurrection
As a huge Dexter fan, I’m telling you, if you’ve loved the show for years, now’s the time to binge it! Seriously, Paramount+ is calling my name for a rewatch this weekend. But if you’re new to Dexter, or maybe stopped watching after that amazing fourth season, you’ve got some catching up to do before you jump into Resurrection.
Dexter is a show that really resonates with people – you either love it or you don’t. Because of that strong connection, fans are often willing to forgive some of the issues in the later seasons, like the attempts to end the series with both the season 8 finale and the 2021 revival, Dexter: New Blood, especially knowing what’s coming with Resurrection.
If you’ve already finished watching Dexter and aren’t sure about starting Resurrection, here’s something to consider: the cast is incredible. It brings back beloved characters like Harry Morgan (James Remar) and Angel Batista (David Zayas), and adds a fantastic new group of actors, including Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, and David Dastmalchian.
The new Dexter series, Resurrection, has a really interesting setup: a darker, updated New York City and a hidden club for serial killers. Even if you were disappointed with previous Dexter seasons, this isn’t just a simple revival – it’s a chance to redeem the story.
Why You May Want To Pass On Dexter: Resurrection
Zach Dilgard/Paramount+ with SHOWTIME
The main problem with Dexter: Resurrection is that it’s designed as a continuation of the entire Dexter story. You really need to have watched all eight seasons of the original series, plus New Blood, to fully understand it. If you’re new to the franchise and just looking for a good psychological thriller, this isn’t the place to start. Resurrection is clearly made for those who have followed Dexter’s journey from the beginning.
Okay, so I was checking out IMDb and saw that Dexter: Resurrection has a seriously high score – 9.1, which puts it at number 26 on their all-time Top 250 TV shows list! It really makes you wonder if it lives up to the hype and if it’s actually better than shows everyone’s talking about now, like The Pitt (which just won an Emmy!), or even classics like True Detective, Succession, and The West Wing. But fair warning: this show is dark. It’s about a serial killer, so if you’re squeamish or don’t like a lot of violence and intensity, honestly, the whole Dexter series probably isn’t for you.
