Fans are buzzing about the trailer for Dune: Part Three, one of the most awaited films of 2026, and it definitely lives up to the hype! While the trailer offers exciting previews of Paul Atreides’ coming war, the villain Scytale (played by Robert Pattinson), and the deepening romance between Paul and Chani, it seems Josh Brolin’s character, Gurney Halleck, won’t have a major role this time around.
Josh Brolin isn’t featured in the new trailer or film. He doesn’t appear in the footage, isn’t listed in the credits, and wasn’t present at the promotional event, suggesting he’s not involved.
Rumors have been circulating about whether Josh Brolin will appear in Dune 3. However, fans can likely rest easy: Brolin confirmed his involvement in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year. He explained that although he hadn’t started filming at the time (as the movie was already in production), he had read the script and knew he had a role.
Josh Brolin’s Gurney Has A Very Small Role In Dune 3
The actor acknowledged his part in the movie is relatively small. While fans might be disappointed – his character is a favorite and Josh Brolin is always a welcome presence – it actually makes sense given the source material. The upcoming Dune: Part Three is based on Dune Messiah, and his character doesn’t feature prominently in that book, though the film will likely still make some changes to the story.
One of the things that really struck me about the book, and seems to be carried over into the film, is how much time we spend with Paul and Lady Jessica on Caladan, the Atreides home world. They develop a pretty significant relationship there, and I was glad to see Rebecca Ferguson in the trailer – she’s clearly a key part of the story. She recently told Happy Sad Confused that Denis Villeneuve specifically wanted to include a scene for her, even though her character’s arc is largely concluded by that point, which speaks to her importance and his dedication to the source material.
I only just started working on the project, so I don’t really have much to say about it yet. I’ve read the script and think it’s going to be amazing. My involvement was originally limited to the first two parts. My character wasn’t even supposed to be in the third movie, but the director, Denis, decided he needed one scene with me, so I got one.
Because Jessica’s scene involves Paul, we can probably expect to see Gurney in the movie too, likely for one final scene with Timothée Chalamet’s character. However, there’s a chance Gurney might not make the final cut, as Dune 2 removed a few characters – including those played by Stephen McKinley Henderson and Tim Blake Nelson – even after they filmed scenes. Hopefully, that won’t happen this time, and the cast listing simply reflects contractual obligations, but it’s a possibility.
I really hope Josh Brolin comes back for the third Dune movie! His character feels so important to the story, and it would be amazing to see him involved in wrapping up the trilogy, even if it’s just a little bit. But honestly, even if he can’t, I’m still incredibly excited for Dune 3 – it sounds like it’s shaping up to be one of the best films of 2026!
Dune: Part Three will be released on December 18th, 2026.
