Reverend Richard Coles’ book, Murder Before Evensong, has been adapted into a five-part TV series with the same title, featuring Matthew Lewis.
The actor known for his role in Harry Potter now plays a vicar named Daniel Clement. His peaceful life in the small town of Champton is disrupted when a body is discovered inside his church, forcing him to question everything he believed about the community.
Coles said seeing the adaptation come to life was incredibly rewarding and exciting. He praised the team’s work and noted it’s wonderful to see the story interpreted through other people’s creativity.
As a total movie buff, I think about books the same way I think about films – once you finish a project and send it out into the world, it really isn’t yours anymore. It takes on a new life with every reader, living in their head and being interpreted in a million different ways. That’s what I love about them – a book doesn’t just have a life, it has countless ones, depending on who’s experiencing it.
As a huge fan, it’s just amazing to watch incredibly talented people collaborate and create something totally unexpected. Seeing them at their best and building something you never imagined is really captivating.
But are there plans to adapt the rest of his Canon Clement Mysteries series?
Read on for everything we know so far about a potential Murder Before Evensong season 2.
Is Murder Before Evensong returning for season 2?
We don’t have any official news about whether the show will continue, but with several more books available, another season is probable—particularly if enough people watched the first one.
Watch this space for updates.
When could a potential Murder Before Evensong season 2 be released?
We wouldn’t expect a new series to arrive until at least mid-to-late 2026.
Which cast members could return for a potential Murder Before Evensong season 2?

Alongside Matthew Lewis as Canon Daniel Clement, we’d also expect to see the following main players:
- Amanda Redman as Audrey Clement
- Amit Shah as DS Neil Vanloo
The next mystery will feature a lot of new actors, as well as a few familiar faces returning to the show.
What could happen in a potential Murder Before Evensong season 2?
If the show stays true to the source material, here’s a look at what might happen – though keep in mind that adaptations often differ from the books.
A Death in the Parish, the second book in Coles’ series, picks up the story a few months after the events of Murder Before Evensong.
The story follows Daniel as he attempts to guide his community, which is unexpectedly merged with the neighboring areas of Upper and Lower Badsaddle, causing disruption. However, conflicts within the church quickly become minor concerns compared to the larger problems he faces.
His mother, Audrey, is a strong-willed and brave woman who is clearly hiding something from him. And she isn’t the only one keeping secrets.
In the third book, Murder at the Monastery, Daniel seeks peace at the monastery where he once trained, hoping to escape a personal setback. However, his tranquility is quickly disrupted when a death occurs, ruining any chance of recovery.
I’m really hoping they make a Christmas special! It sounds like it would be based on ‘Murder Under the Mistletoe,’ and it’ll be so fun to see Daniel and his mom celebrating Christmas with all the characters from the story – lots of food, drinks, and festive cheer for everyone!
I was immediately hooked by the premise of ‘A Death on Location’ – imagine a glamorous Hollywood film crew descending on the beautiful Champton House! But things take a dark turn when, just as filming gets underway, someone turns up dead, bringing everything to a standstill.
Murder Before Evensong is available to stream on 5.
