Although it’s been out for years, Red Dead Redemption 2 still does not run at 60fps on consoles.
Originally launched on older consoles, the game can now be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but it still runs at its initial frame rate of 30 frames per second.
Things might be about to change for the game, as there’s talk of a highly anticipated update that would make gameplay much smoother with a 60 frames-per-second rate. Here’s the latest information.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 getting a 60fps update? Rumours explained
Just to be clear, we’re discussing a console version of Red Dead Redemption 2 that runs at 60 frames per second. The game has been able to achieve this speed – and even faster – on computers since 2019.
Talk of a 60fps console version of Red Dead Redemption 2 started after Synth Potato, a Twitter account, noticed an update to the game’s Steam page.
Although these specific updates don’t suggest anything definitive, Synth Potato points out that the page for *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion* was altered shortly before the release of *Oblivion Remastered* earlier this year.
This hints at a better PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2, much like the improved version of Grand Theft Auto 5 released earlier this year. However, experts think any PC improvements would likely happen at the same time as upgraded versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Another Twitter user known for accurately leaking game news, NateTheHate2, has corroborated these claims. They recently confirmed that ports of Red Dead Redemption 2 for current-generation consoles are in development, though they don’t have any information about when they might be released.
As a big fan, I was excited to see that Rockstar actually *did* update the original Red Dead Redemption to run at 60fps on PS5! It’s great to know they’re capable of this kind of thing. Though, wow, it took them 13 years after the first game came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 – still, it’s awesome they finally did it!
Will Red Dead Redemption 2 receive an update to run at 60 frames per second? We don’t have a definitive answer yet, but it appears one is likely being developed.
With GTA 6 now expected next year, a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption 2 on current consoles before the end of 2025 would be a welcome distraction, though it’s unlikely to happen.
