Naughty Dog is currently focused on developing Intergalactic, which is expected to launch on PS5 in 2027. While it’s unclear what they’ll work on next, a third game in The Last of Us series is definitely a possibility.
Absolutely.
Neil Druckmann, the head of the studio, has hinted at continuing the story, saying there’s likely “one more chapter.” He recently shared on Instagram that while cleaning his garage, he discovered sketches from 2003 depicting a story about a man, his adopted daughter, and a journey across a ruined America.
Neil Druckmann, echoing the emotional journey of Joel and Ellie in the first The Last of Us game, shared: “It’s been an incredible experience. I’m thankful for everything, and excited for what’s still to come.”
After The Last of Us Part II came out, Neil Druckmann struggled to come up with an idea for a third game. But in April 2023, during a documentary about the making of the second game, he announced that he now had a concept.
Honestly, when they first started planning this, there wasn’t a fully formed story yet. But they had this incredible idea, something on the same level of emotional impact as both The Last of Us games. It’s totally its own unique thing, but there’s a connecting thread running through all three parts. It really feels like there’s one more chapter left to tell, and I’m so excited to see where it goes!
Druckmann has suggested there are still a few future plans for the world of The Last of Us. One confirmed project is the third season of the HBO television series. However, beyond that, no other Last of Us projects have been officially announced.
Even if Naughty Dog began working on The Last of Us 3 immediately after finishing their current project, it would probably still be at least five years before the game came out. This means the next Last of Us game will most likely be released for the PlayStation 6.
