In my younger days, I used to frequent stand-up comedy clubs, particularly Up the Creek in Greenwich – a venue famously owned and operated by the iconic Malcolm Hardee, a man whose life story deserves to be immortalized on the big screen. With that intrigue, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the trailer for ‘Is this Thing On?’ It certainly piqued my curiosity!
In this scenario, as the marriage between Alex (Will Arnett) and Tess (Laura Dern) deteriorates, Alex finds himself at a crossroads of middle age and divorce. Seeking a fresh start, he immerses himself in New York’s comedy scene, searching for a new sense of purpose. Simultaneously, Tess grapples with the personal sacrifices she made for their family, causing both of them to grapple with co-parenting, personal identity, and the challenges that come with navigating life’s changes.
Written, produced, and directed by Bradley Cooper, this film appears to be another potential Oscar nominee. However, movies about comedians can be tricky because while some, like “Man on the Moon” and “The King of Comedy,” have been critically acclaimed, others such as “Punchline” (a flop for Tom Hanks) and “The Comedian’s Guide to Survival” (a bomb featuring James Buckley), have fallen flat.
