We used to frequent comedy clubs, especially ‘Up the Creek!’ in Greenwich, a famously wild venue run by the unforgettable Malcolm Hardee. He was a true legend – his life would make an amazing movie! He was known for everything from shocking stage antics and hosting shows while tipsy, to managing a controversial dance troupe called ‘The Greatest Show on Legs’ and creating incredibly outlandish publicity stunts for the comedians he represented. So, we were definitely curious when we heard about the ‘Is this Thing On?’ trailer.
What’s ‘Is this thing on?’ trailer about….
Alex (Will Arnett) is going through a midlife crisis and divorce, trying to find meaning by pursuing stand-up comedy in New York City. Meanwhile, his wife, Tess (Laura Dern), is grappling with the choices she made to prioritize their family. Together, they’re learning to co-parent and rediscover who they are as individuals.
Is this Thing on? trailer based on a true story?
This movie seems to be based on the real life of British comedian John Bishop, who is from Liverpool. Will Arnett and Bishop connected, and Arnett was inspired to turn his life story into a film.
The film stars include:
Will Arnett and Laura Dern are joined by Andra Day, Bradley Cooper, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, and Scott Icenogle in this project.
Behind the scenes
Bradley Cooper co-wrote, co-produced, and directed this film, and it’s shaping up to be another potential Oscar nominee for him. However, movies about comedians are often risky – while some, like Man on the Moon and The King of Comedy, are hits, others, such as Punchline and The Comedian’s Guide to Survival, have flopped.
IS THIS THING ON? is released in UK cinemas on 30th January 2026.
