With Disney’s acquisition of Fox seven years ago bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been anticipating the introduction of mutants. While we’ve seen characters connected to the X-Men in projects like Deadpool & Wolverine and the return of the original team in Avengers: Doomsday, a fully new team from the main MCU timeline (Earth-616) isn’t expected until Phase 7. However, it’s possible Wonder Man might be introducing the first of these new mutants.
Ms. Marvel’s story officially included a “mutation,” strongly suggesting she’s a mutant in the classic Marvel style. Several other characters with mutant abilities, like Namor and Mr. Immortal, have also been featured. Now, Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, has been introduced. He’s a very powerful hero in Marvel Comics, and that power seems to be reflected in the show, though talking about it means revealing spoilers for Wonder Man.
The show slowly unveils just how powerful Wonder Man is within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s incredibly strong and tough, can shoot energy blasts, and manipulate ions. By the end, when he rescues Trevor Slattery, he appears to be able to fly, or at least jump to amazing heights. However, what’s truly intriguing is what the show doesn’t reveal about his abilities.
How Wonder Man Gets His Powers & Why He Might Be A Mutant In The MCU

The Disney+ show about Wonder Man takes an unexpected approach by not explaining how he got his powers. While the series shows us Simon’s history, it doesn’t reveal the origin of his abilities – something most superhero stories usually cover. In the original comics, Wonder Man gained his powers through experiments conducted by Baron Zemo, who used ionic energy and intended for Simon to spy on the Avengers. These experiments actually made Wonder Man incredibly powerful, eventually reaching a level comparable to Thor. He later became a hero himself and joined the Avengers.
It’s highly unlikely Zemo will be connected to Wonder Man’s origins in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Zemo has appeared before, there are currently no major plans for the character, making a sudden link to Simon Williams’ backstory seem strange. Their histories don’t align – Simon gained his powers as a teen while Zemo was likely still in Sokovia. Plus, considering Zemo’s previous goal of destroying the Avengers, it doesn’t make sense that he would create a powerful being to oppose them.
This brings us back to the possibility that Wonder Man is a mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His powers began developing during puberty, which aligns with the origins of many mutants in the comics and when the X-Gene usually activates. This could also explain the involvement of the Department of Damage Control – they’ve investigated people with powers before, like Kamala Khan, so it’s possible they’ll become an anti-mutant organization in the MCU. It’s worth noting that Wonder Man has a history with the X-Men in the comics, often being close friends with Beast.
Besides being a mutant, Wonder Man’s powers could also come from Roxxon, a company that’s been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Iron Man movie. They’ve appeared in various TV shows like Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Loki, and She-Hulk. In the show, Doorman gets his powers from a strange chemical substance created by Roxxon, similar to how Cloak gained abilities in Cloak & Dagger. If Simon Williams’ powers are tied to Roxxon, it seems odd they haven’t shown that connection yet, suggesting they might be holding out for a potential reveal that he’s a mutant, perhaps in a second season of Wonder Man.
Wonder Man is now streaming on Disney+.
